Yup, it's the idler gear jamming. Why? The new fecking gasket is too thin.

Feckedity feckidity feck. No oil leaks. But bike won't start-just clicks when I press start. Drained new oil. Removed cover, checked wiring-all okay. Checked fuses-all okay. Checked battery-fine. Touched negative on batteryvery, very hot. So, must be mechanical. Remove cover, do up loosely, it starts. Tighten cover-it won't start.

Looks like the starter idler gear is jamming. Time to take the cover off again.  :bash:

In the end, I removed the thick washer that keeps the idler gear engaged with the starter clutch. It now works, with the strong possibility that the idler gear will move out and so disengage with the starter clutch at some point.

Next-not one oil leak but two. The main one is now sorted but: Good grief.

New front shoe.  Now I can actually make it back out of Region 4 next weekend.  I don't want to get trapped there and have to buy a Harley.   ;D

I was in the same boat. The tires that were on it had plenty of tread left. Just not enough to make it to Clay's and back.  :-\  I'll put them back on when this set wears out.

I now have a leak free 25 year old VFR. However, despite thinking that this would be the end of the near-restoration project, it's not. I need to retap several female threads and get a new front tyre. Then I can put the fairing back on.

Put a new front tire on the GSA.  Had a helluva time getting the bead to seat for some reason.   Hot sun and 70 psi finally did the trick.

His wrists are fecked from various racing accidents. He's offered it to me for £500, which is fair.
