On my Bandit I run PR4's. I love them, and have been very impressed with the traction and mileage, both wet and dry. The Bandit is the bike I tour and travel on, and it will be PR4's on that as I move forward.

I need new skins front and rear for the SV1000, and I'm wondering about thoughts on tires for that mount. While I love the PR4's, they are expensive. I am not opposed to running them on the SV, but I am wondering if there are tries that are cheaper that meet these stipulations:

At this point I have no plans to tour on it. Some commuting on nice days and just general nice day riding, so wet weather performance is not critical- but if I get stuck in rain I don't want to slide off. That said, I have no plans to ride in rain with this bike (we all know how that can change).

Decent mileage and great traction. I know those two don't always go together, but they seem to do well together on the PR4's with the dual compund.

Lower cost than the PR4's.

So- thoughts?

Conti-Motions. I ran them when funds were tight in place of the PRs. Got 7-8k miles out of them on the Daytona. Stuck decent and held up ok.

I had good luck with Avon Spirit tyres (they're British, so that's spelled correctly . They were less expensive than Michelin Road series tires and ran well on long trips. I never had the need to test them in very wet conditions, but magazine reviews suggested they had good wet grip.

Don't have a lot of miles on the Dunlop Roadsmart IVs I got in October, but handling so far impressed me. Not enough miles to rate wet weather handling and estimate lifetime wear. I was out on cold damp roads last week, but only for 50 miles and never over 35 degree lean, but they didn't slip once. Similar dry-road confidence to what I felt with Pilot 4s. The Dunlops are marketed as a high-mileage ST alternative to Michelins, but they were ~$100 less than Road 5 GTs, so I figured I'd give them a try. YRMV

I recently put a Dunlop RoadSport2 rear tire on the Super Duke and it seems OK. Too early to tell what kind of mileage I will get, but they are cheap. Like $200 for a set cheap. If I can get 3k+ out of the rear on "The Beast" I will be buying more of them unless I'm going on a 10-day trip and need 4K+ mileage.

I paid $300 + mounting for the Dunlop IVs. Question is whether they wear for 150% more mileage.

Bridgestone BT31, a tad more rounded profile than PR4's, but good wear and grip,better price too. Conti motions are a good choice , I ran many pairs of those with excellent results. Good all around tire.I would strongly recommend Conti Road Attack 3 tires good ( not quite st tire) mileage excellent grip.Good prices available on these too. may opt for these on the big V next time.I ran Road Attacks on my old speed triple many times, LOVED them

For tires on the cheap, you cant beat the conti motions. I ran them on the sprint one season when funds were low. They performed very well for the price point. You are looking at sub $200 for a pair on the SV. That's less than you will pay for a PR4 rear alone.

Because of price difference between PR 4's my next set will be free.
I love the PR's but they are pricing them out of my comfort zone.

The Roadsmarts are a very good tire.

That's what came on the V. He said they were brand new. I've pushed them a bit and all has been quite good. They're squaring off a bit but that's cuz 70% of my riding is commuting. So that's to be expected. Not sure what my mileage is but I feel like it's over 5k and were it not for the squaring, I'd say they're still in decent shape.

Front 120/70 zr17
Rear 180/55 zr17

They are the Raven 009 series.

That's a great video. Apples to Apples. I guess I will try Dunlops in the spring: RoadSmart in the rear and RoadSport2 in the front.

trying some Road 5's on the superduke, but I think I will go back to qualifiers when they are done. Always ran the Q2's on my CBR954 and loved them. I assume the Q3's are better? what kind of mileage are you getting out of them?

Never ran the Q2's. But I get 4-5,000 running Q3's on my sprint. Never had a slip and even got a couple track days on them. Switched to Angel GT's for a trip to Dallas, will switch back when they are done.
