Okay, this has to be enemy action now. No one could be so incompetent, could they?
Nine months ago I submitted a request for an IP address for a new Wiki server at work. It's not a project, just some folks who would like to take advantage of new wiki functionality which can't be done on the current server.
I submit a request through the workflow application.
No response.
Stop by and ask. Busy on one problem or another.
Send email. No response.
This goes on for 9 months. I even added a button to the workflow application so folks could just click the button and a reminder email would go to the group. Still nothing.
Because we continue to get IP addresses that are already in use by other servers, I modified their task in the workflow application to do a DNS lookup and a ping. Neither a guarantee that the IP is or isn't in use, but it's a start. Still get IPs for new systems when the IP is in use by another system.
I finally discussed this with my manager who then went on vacation the following week. I didn't know if he spoke to anyone or got a response or what so I spoke to the Director (a new Senior Director at the time and my bosses boss). She said 9 months was a touch too long too and spoke to their Director. He spoke to their manager. She spoke to the group and I got an IP and a talking to by their manager that I should have come to her (I'm pretty sure complaints should go to my manager for escalations, etc vs telling her about one of her people).
Anyway, I got my IP last month. Got the server provisioned and the IP in place. Got accounts on the server and started my normal data gathering. A month later I started getting errors in my morning report that my service account, used to log in to every system for server checks, wasn't able to log in to the new server. Hmm, well I'm getting ready to go on vacation so I'm tidying up and trying to get stuff done. Since the server hasn't been completed yet I'll check it when I get back (today in fact).
Try to log in and fail. Hmm, the login prompt tells me this is not my server.
Seriously?
It took 9 months and upper management involvement to get the IP and a month after getting it, it's reassigned?
Are you people INCOMPETENT!?!
I would be embarrassed if I couldn't successfully manage my IP address database.
Oh, by the way. There are 5 systems they're using to manage IPs. Two spreadsheets and three applications. One is a new one they bought last year. They're supposed to be consolidating the others into the new application. Still getting duplicate IPs though.
