Moto GP - Qatar ***SPOILERS***
« on: March 20, 2014, 02:22:51 PM »
Wow.  FP1 results are a bit shocking to me.  Granted the top 5 had tested here this year already and Aleix also had the advantage of a softer tire, but a second+ faster than the nearest factory machine is eye opening.  I realize of course that its only FP1 but a full second seems alot to make up.
It may well be back to the old guard tomorrow, but if this continues throughout the weekend its sure to put the GP paddock on its ear.  Fuerza Aleix!

Salute to Romano Fenati leading the charge in both FP1 and 2 in Moto3.  Ive been following this kid since he podiumed at Qatar two years ago and went on to win his first race in Jerez.  He is now part of Rossi's moto3 team and its great to see him back at the sharp end.

Not what I would have guessed either. In fact, there's a lot of stuff in there I didn't expect. Sure, maybe expectations return to normal by race time, but this is already fun.

Are Edwards and Aleix on the same machinery?

In Moto2, Herrin is almost 2 seconds behind his teammate.

As usual the track is in poor condition with a lot of sand. Once it cleans up I'm betting on business as usual

Is the 107% rule still in effect for qualifying? The field may be pretty small.  If this were the qualifying results, we'd have a 5 horse race.   :o

I'm calling factory Yamaha to be on the podium for this one.  Marky Marc will be competitive but Jorge is going to take it.

Maybe.

Reading some interviews, it sounds like Big Espargaro was the only one of the fast guys who ran the soft tire. That explains a lot. And the factory guys didn't test there with the others. They'll probably make pretty big gains tomorrow.

This is going to be a fun year, I think. Looks like the new rules will make it more than the usual suspects every race. I wouldn't take much from the first practice of the season, though.

FP2 in the books.  Aleix still on top from Dovi and Alvaro.  Pedrosa the closest factory bike in 4th - .573 adrift.
Bradley Smith and Polyccio still ahead of the factory yammies.

Its still early of course.  The big possum walks late.

Espargaro the elder still on top after FP3.  Improved his time again to a 1'54'773 - only rider to break 1'55

Surely hes the favorite for the pole at this point.  My only question is if he can keep this pace for an entire race.

Okay, I just looked at the FP3 times and I'm genuinely scratching my head. I really expected the factory guys to be back up on top by now.

Dovi - 4th
Marquez - 5th
Lorenzo - 7th
Rossi - 9th
Pedrobot - 10th
Crutch(very)low - 12th

Huh. Can't  wait to see the qualy times.

Cal seems to be struggling compared to the other Ducs on the grid.

Cal is overrated, I expect quiet Dovi to quietly  outperform him in 2014.

If you go to motgp.com and look at "analysis" in "results and statistics" you gonna find M1s of Aleix and Edwards are dog slow. Like 10 kmh compared to factory/tech3 Yamahas, or 10 mph down on Ducatis and factory Hondas. Hayden`s Honda is even slower. He needs to put that red triangle on the back of his bike or people will run into him on straightaways.
I guess  soft tire gives tremendous advantage , of course everyone says you won`t be able to use it in the race.

Anyhow, first 4-5 laps will be interesting but in the second part of the race I expect factory Hondas and Yamahas on top.

Ducs can use the soft tires. Like tomek said, it looks like they can't race with them because they can't go the distance. It ought to help in qualifying.

The tire thing is making it even harder to figure out what's going on. The timing charts I've seen don't say what tire they're on. Dovi's fast times were on softs. I'd guess Ianonne's were. Tires don't matter as much for Crutchlow because they're often pointing up.

On the extra fuel load: Nicky says the 24 liters given to the Open teams isn't that big a deal since his bike only holds 22 anyway.

I still like MotoGP.

The new rules certainly brought the field closer together.  I assume this was their goal, so at this point it has to be declared at least a temporary success.

If I had the vacation time to do it again, I would in a heartbeat.  What a wonderful place to visit and an excellent facility to watch MotoGP.

I could only get in one race this year and it's Indy because I've never got to experience the Indy Mile nor the bikes on Meridian St.  And, since I'm riding up there this year, it'll make it even that much more special to me.

I didn't plan on COTA because I didn't know that I was going to receive an additional week of vacation this year.  I thought it was coming next year.  Oh well.

Hopefully I'll be back to Austin in 2015.  Like Doug said, what a fantastic track and city.

I finally had the time to watch the Qatar GP race.  Wow! It was fantastic!  Looking to watch moto2 and moto3 later today.   All the reviews of the race finally pushed me into buying the videopass.  Now, no excuses for missing the race.

And yet Vale didn't finish any better this year than he did last. But then again, neither did Marky Marq.

Jorge checked out for the win last year and Rossi was a distant second - just read that today and it jogged my memory.

Not sure where Marquez finished in Qatar last year but I do know he won his first premier class race in Austin.  Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. satxbonneville, I was fortunate enough to be sitting in the corner where he set up Dani and passed him for the lead.  It was a thing of beauty and Ill never forget it.
