eBay: 1969 HONDA SANDCAST CB750 VERY RARE PROTOTYPE
« on: February 09, 2014, 03:12:26 PM »
I caught this story in Wired:
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2014/02/honda-cb750-prototype/

Quote
It’s hard to overstate the importance of the Honda CB750. Simply put, it was the world’s first superbike and a milestone in motorcycling. And one of just four handmade prototypes can be yours — if you’ve got something north of $130k in your bank account.

A gorgeous blue prototype is up for sale on eBay, and it’s prompted one hell of a bidding war. Ninety bidders have pushed the opening bid of $1,969 — clever — to $130,300 by Friday afternoon.

“Six figures? For a motorcycle?” This isn’t just any motorcycle.

(more article at the link)

In the first paragraph it leads to an eBay auction (28 hours remaining as I type this):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Honda-CB-/331120055291?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276

"World's first superbike"? Not Vincent, not Brough?? I know which I'd have rather than a shitty handling Honda.

Those were English bikes, not superbikes.  There's a significant difference.

And sadly, again, the Teutonic legacy is forgotten.

I'm thinking you haven't looked at a calendar recently.  Last time I checked, 1969 came before 1975.

On a side note, I've actually sat on (but not ridden, sadly) Reg's bike.  It's in the Irv Seaver's showroom in Anaheim.

And Honda won how many superbike championships between 1969 & 1975?

And I've ridden pillion behind Reg twice and Jason once while taking his CLASS school.  ;)

None- but then, nobody else did, either.

However, we aren't talking about racing here.  We are talking about production bikes that were dubbed "super bikes" at the time.

Dubbed by who? I was 13 in '69 & 18 in '75. The only time I heard super bikes was on ABC.

That Honda was a piece of shit if you wanted to ride it more than 100 miles at (or close to) redline.  ;)

I'm pretty sure it was Cycle World that coined the phrase.
