Office Etiquette
« on: June 26, 2014, 07:10:15 AM »
The other day, our building distributed a memo about “parking etiquette” for the parking garage under the building.  It unfortunately had to be distributed because too many yahoos were just doing stupid things (parking in front of access doors and blocking them, backing into spaces while holding up a line of traffic, etc…).

It got me thinking that we should distribute a building wide memo on overall Office Etiquette.  I’ll share a few pet peeves of mine that appear to be unwritten.

1)    When waiting to get on an elevator, WAIT until people exiting the car on that floor exit BEFORE you enter.  I don’t know how many times I’ve attempted to exit an elevator all to be blocked or pushed back by people getting on.

2)   If you are going to use your speaker phone, shut your door!  Contrary to your thought process, not everyone wants to hear your phone conversation or conference call.  And, if you’re in a cube farm, the use of the speaker phone should not be allowed.

3)   When you’re sharing a printer on the floor, sort through the documents you’re picking up BEFORE walking back to your desk.  Make sure you didn’t grab someone else’s print job.

4)   When exiting the building in the winter, USE the revolving doors!  There’s a reason the side doors have a sign reading, “Use Revolving Door.”

5)   When walking the steps, be courteous to those coming up from behind you.  Step aside on the next floor and let quicker traffic by you.  In other words, get your head out of your current text messaging and pay attention (that covers about 80% of the cases anyhow)

What additions would you make to this list?

I think the break room has a whole 'nother set of rules for etiquette. Furthermore, I think we've already bitched about restroom habits on the other site.

People are pigs. Actually I think pigs might be more clean.

If you're going to hawk wrapping paper, chocolates, popcorn, Girl Scout cookies, etc. for your kids, simply put the brochure in a common area where you know everyone will see it and let them choose whether or not to order something. Don't try to guilt everyone into ordering something by circulating a memo with a distribution list that includes each person in the office, so we have to pass it from person to person and cross our names off as we see it.

I mean, I have no problem crossing my name off and passing it along without ordering anything. You won't make ME feel guilty. I'll just feel as though you're an ass. But I know plenty of people in the office who feel compelled to order stuff because otherwise the distribution list will come back with their name crossed off but the order form won't have their name on it. Guilt never makes overpriced chocolate taste better.
I used to make a bigger impression.

This one, big time. This is sooooo annoying. I mentioned it to my supervisor, but of course, he didn't say anything to the offending party.

That's when you get up and close that person's door FOR THEM. Do this a few times. They'll get the hint.

If it opens outward, after the third time, push a chair under the knob.

Since we have all guys in our office, that's kind of expected and the really good ones are rewarded with applause.

Yep, I've done that myself.

Yesterday, we were in a training session held in an auditorium with about 100 pepole in it. Before we started, there was a guy behind me doing a conference call on this cell phone turned on speaker mode.  I just kept talking to the person beside him loudly until the conference call taker asked me to pipe down.  I told him to go take his call elsewere if we're bothering him.  This isn't the place for a conference call.

We have our own Keurig machine. Now it's just who goes and gets the water.

Our office just added a commercial Keurig which hooks directly to a water supply (thank goodness!).
