Sturgis rally
« on: August 07, 2021, 08:04:58 PM »
So, the annual mess is well underway. 2 fatalities so far and numerous injury accidents I swear the crowd gets dumber every year.  The extent of my riding this week is to the local hotel bar (3 miles). I have met a few decent people and talked to the “regulars”. Always an “interesting “ time.
the above are merely the ramblings of a hamfisted fuckwit who has broken too many helmets.

Super spreader event to boot. Stubborn stupidity at its height. Real fu**ing Americans, making sure we never return to normal again.. Wonder if they realize how much harm they could possibly be doing to this country ,maybe the Chinese will give them a thank you run pin.
If we do nothing to mitigate the spread of variants, nothing will ever be near normal again,by being stubborn ,this crap virus will be around in more infectious and deadly forms forever. Please stop being stupid America.
There rant over.

Every year I hear about this and every year I think "what on earth is the attraction?  "

I still love it when Dan first got his BMW in NJ. He mentioned it to some colleagues and one of them asked if he would be going to Sturgis. Dan's response "No way. I got a motorcycle to get away from people!"

Been through the area many times. Only once was within 2 weeks (prior) to the rally. That was already too close because of price hikes and booked-a-year-ahead empty motels with no rooms available.

I don't buy into the fear mongering. I also don't buy into the anti-vaxxing. Reality is somewhere in between. We (as a species) WILL all get exposed to it and survive or not; creating the heard immunity sooner or later, naturally or otherwise. Time moves on.

My policy on group riding and large events is to find out which way the group is going, then head the other way. I've never been too interested in hanging around with a bunch of half drunk sweaty. "rebels" with loud pipes. I like Harley Davidson bikes well enough, I could just do without all the lifestyle baggage that often goes along with it.

I’d normally agree if it wasn’t for all the other super spreader events going on by those claiming we shouldn’t gather in large groups to prevent super spreader events.

Not targeting you, but I do tire of the fear mongering by those who ignore the very guidelines they want US to follow when they get in the way of what THEY want to do.

There's a part of me that wants to go to the Sturgis rally at least once.  But then I remember that I don't like crowds or traffic jams or drunk people, and the feeling passes.  The area, however, is great motorcycling.

the best time to ride here is September. temps are usually perfect and very little traffic is you hit it between the end of tourist season and the start of the fall colors.

I just keep repeating that thing in my head that I've always had in there.

1.  "I have 20 years or experience riding motorcycles"

2.  "No, you have one year of experience that you're repeated 20 times"

I just don't understand the draw.  I probably wouldn't ride with more than a handful of you monkeys (in a group) much less a quarter of a million strangers.  But I can't look away from the train wreck either.

The “Rally” will color many people’s opinion of the area
which is unfortunate. The area has some truly
spectacular riding that really needs to be experienced.
I was there with my teenage son around ‘95 or so
( 2 weeks AFTER the rally ) and to this day it
remains my most memorable ride.
Please don’t let the image of the “event”
discourage anyone from making a trip there.
Just avoid the chaos.
It's never too early to plan.
It's never too late to go.

The area is spectacular, just avoid the rally and have a hoot/hooning good time.  We were there a month before the rally a few years ago and rode a bunch of great roads.

We stayed here (https://rimrocklodge.com/) for a four day weekend.  Highly recommended!

I just don't understand the draw.

Kind of like having an IBRA certificate for a different group of riders.  "Have you been to Sturgis, etc?"

Maybe not for you - you're familiar with those roads - it's completely different for a flatlander - especially after a few beers.

An acquaintance of ours is at the rally right now - can't wait to hear about it  - must attend next happy hour.   8)
