How to re-seat the bead on riding lawnmower tires
« on: July 29, 2021, 09:56:36 AM »
Cadet cub. Apparently my son has been mowing for months with completely flat/dismounted front tires. They don’t appear to have or need tubes. Don’t know how I could get enough air back in them to re seat the beads. There are huge gaps.

Ideas? How do these things work?

Hook up the hose, spritz of ether and toss in a match.

did you try a ratchet strap around the center? sometimes that will spread them out enough.

I have had the caster wheels on my mower go like that in the past.. I just hit them with high pressure air and they set immediately with no issues.

I’ll try it but I can’t imagine it will do anything. I can see the inside of the rim where the valve/air goes in LOL

Having performed the task recently, I'll say - the "instant gas expansion method" works wonders.

If I were to do the same again - I'd spray more around the bead for evenness as when the tire seated - it was a bit crooked on the bead (good enough for their needs for the day - but back at camp, something to maybe tend).

Yep, starting fluid (ether) works!  :firedevil:

Seated a lot of troubled tires over the years, with this method. Just get the tire bead wet with soap and water first and keep a fire extinguisher handy just incase.

Expanding foam?

We laugh, but in this application, it would be an interesting thought to give it a whirl... Those tires can't hold but 3-10 psi, and aren't exactly required to run at high speed. Fronts wouldn't be appreciable weight either...

Tried starter fluid 5 times. Didn’t work but made for entertaining fires. Ratchet strap and removing the valve core worked. Thanks!
