Daily Drinker?
« on: October 14, 2019, 04:45:31 PM »
If you like spirits, there's a good chance you have a couple of different types of your favorite spirt in the cabinet.  There's the occasional rare find for keeping around for something special, even if it's just to share with friends.  Then, there's your "daily drinker."  By "daily drinker," I mean your go to for when you simply want a drink by yourself.

For me, whiskey is my go to spirit and I just realized today there are a handful of whiskeys I rotate through in my cabinet as my go to solo drink.

In addition to several rare or hard to find whiskies in my cabinet, I keep at least one of the following on a rotating basis based on the fact their easy to drink neat and are not too painful on the checking account (< $60 / bottle).

*  Knob Creek Barrel Proof
*  Wild Turkey Rare Breed
*  Eagle Rare
*  Pikesville Rye
*  Four Roses Single Barrel (I loved Blanton's and one time I did a single barrel blind flight while in Louisville and liked Four Roses Single Barrel the best... don't you just love blind taste tests?)

Today, I added a new whiskey to the rotation.  In some recent travel, I tried Old Forester 1920 and fell in love with it.  After seeing it today at the local ABC at my sub $60 price point, I picked up a bottle.  Currently, I'm getting ready to go get a third pour of it.  Cheers.

What is your favorite / go-to "daily drinker(s)?"  Perhaps there's something out there I need to try.  :)

I'm much more of a $30-ish  (+/- $2) per bottle kind of guy. There are lots to choose from. Evan Williams Single Barrel (no longer in PA as I understand it) was a regular buy. But Four Roses Single Barrel is my go-to when I'm willing to spend a bit more ($40-ish). It takes me a long time to go through a bottle. Currently working on a Jeffersons Very Small Batch which is inoffensive. Probably won't get it again, but it's fine for making Kentucky Mules. Not all that interesting neat.

Hydrate or die.

I always drink a healthy dose of H2O between pours.  Today is Columbus day and the bank is closed.  I started drinking early while prepping dinner.  It's a good afternoon so far.

NC ABC Stores suck.  All of those on my list go for a minimum of $40 before sin taxes.  I'm always better off picking up something in another state while traveling.

I remember paying like $4 a fifth for Pikesville when it was made in Pikesville. We considered it rotgut back then. I liked it but told no one. :D

When I was at Garavan's Bar in Galway Ireland last year, I came across an original bottle of Pikesville.  I had to try it and it was all good for me.

I like the Four Roses, but thanks to a west coast hook-up I've been enjoying Whip Saw and Slaughterhouse from The Splinter Group.

 Some time ago I had been on a boutique whiskey kick. Don't drink it every day as that's what ale is for, but frequently. More often in winter.

 Went shopping at Costco, and saw a smokin' deal on Jack Daniels. When I got home I cracked it, and had a glass. Jack Daniels is pretty fucking good.

 That said the only boutique whiskey that stands out to me is the Angel's Envy. Buffalo Trace is not bad either, but the classics still have it especially when it comes to scotch.

 BTW the making of whiskey, and ale are very similar. Probably why I like 'em both.

If I'm going to sip a little whiskey in the evening, it'll be either Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses or Monkey Shoulder- because those are what are in my cabinet right now.

When I'm not in a whiskey mood, it'll be some Dictador Insolent or maybe some Rhum Clement Agricole.

Or a beer.

No likker for me, at the house anyway. I like a glass of The Glenlivit now and then but it's a rare treat only.

I'll take a nice glass of 19 Crimes dark red blend wine from Australia though, delightful stuff. Too many different wines to list really but it seems there's always a bottle of 19 Crimes around, or Maryhill Winemakers Red. Wonderful stuff,

For Bourbons, I enjoy Knob Creek straight or in a Perfect Manhattan or a Boulevardier.

For Scotch, I prefer Talisker straight but Glenlivet is good straight and it plays well with others in a cocktail.

Autumn and winter seem to be made for whiskies.  Chilly days, early evenings, fires at the hearth, comfy chairs and the dog sleeping in my lap sets a whisky mood.

Michter's Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye.

It's relatively cheap and I've been preferring rye lately, so amongst the handful of ryes and other bourbons I have in the cabinet I'm almost always tempted to grab the Michter's.

My favorite (proper) Irish Whiskey is Writers Tears.    ;D

https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/walsh-whiskey-distillery-co/writers-tears-copper-pot-irish-whiskey/

I’ve got half-bottle stashed under the cabinet for special circumstances.  Come on up and I’ll break it out.    My current daily drink is a negroni.

I’m working on getting the ingredients together to make a MI-2-NY (which as far as I can tell stands for Milan to New York), a drink I picked up on in Verona this summer. Don’t have the recipe handy. It’s basically a negroni made with bourbon, Campari, and 2 other bitter aperitifs.  Tastes great.
