Route advice from VA to Danbury, CT then Portland, ME.
« on: October 04, 2016, 04:35:57 PM »
Getting to these places is not the issue but I'm still deciding on the route.  I will do one of two.  A.  81 out of VA to 84 and east to CT.  B.  81 to 78, cross the Tappan Zee and up to CT.  The wife and I are spending a week doing the coast of ME, maybe with the Adam Henry, Matthew.  Anyway, the wife wants to stop at an outlet and do some clothes shopping.  Doesn't matter if it's Sat or Sun but was wondering if anyone knows these routes well enough to know of a good place for her to shop.  I know both of these routes as I drive up to CT/NY several times a year for work but never look for anything like an outlet.

Tappan Zee over the GWB every time. 84 East of Danbury blows goats most of the time.

We are considering staying on 87 N next time and bypassing CT all together.

Tappan Zee back down to 95 to 91 is another alternative.

If your doing the Tappan Zee, I suggest the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) vice 95.  If doing 84, I suggest taking a nice side route through the Delaware Watergap, on the New Jersey side use Old Mine Road, nice quiet ride and a good break from the slab.

What Mossy said. You DON'T want to do 95!

Wait a minute... You're real question is "Where can I satisfy my wife's Outlet shopping fetish" and not so much the best highway route through NY/New England.  Right?

Well there are the outlets in Hagerstown MD,  or if with a little bit out of the way with a Hudson crossing north of the Tappan Zee...

498 Red Apple Ct, Central Valley, NY 10917

Not the best ride but pretty good.  Once you get to Danbury go north on RT 7.  In VT take RT 4 east to 104.  In NH take RT 25 into ME and towards Portland.

There are outlets in VT and ME.  The ones in CT aren't worth stopping at!

If I cross Tappan Zee I'll likely take what I believe is 684 to Danbury.  I've usually been ok doing 84 into CT in the past though.

I like that option but we may not want to be on the road that long on Sunday.

Depending on the time of day. Mid morning and early afternoon are fine.

691 to 91 back to 84 is a good alternate route if 84 is getting backed up heading through CT.  You avoid the slower areas of 84 near Hartford by using 691/91.
As stated 684 isn't bad as long as it isn't during normal commuter times.

If your vehicle has passenger plates (not commercial plates on a truck and no trailer).  You can also use 81 to 84E to the Taconic State Parkway to 90.  The TSP is a nicer ride, posted at 55 the whole way, whereas 84 switches back and forth b/w 55 and 65.

Back to the original question regarding shopping.  The Woodbury Commons are just off 87 close  to the NY/NJ border.  http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlet/woodbury-common
Without backtracking you would probably need to use 78 or 80E from 81 to work your way east to pick up 87 or 287 to get to Woodbury Commons.
