We're already planning next year's vacation. It's looking like we'll be going to new lengths and heading out to California. We'll probably hit Saguaro NP on the way out and then probably Joshua Tree. Of course we're VERY early in the planning stages so a lot is up in the air. We're planning on 3 days out and 3 days back. We typically wrap 2 full weeks and two days into our vaca since we do it on our anniversary which coincides nicely with the holiday being that it's Aug 31st.
We'll be buying a new trailer before then, something shorter to allow for access to more places with length restrictions. So we'll be about as good as we can be for multiple simultaneous long travel days. I got that part covered.
The question is this: Will it be worth having the bikes (2 XT250s) with us in that general vicinity? Is there good riding in or around Joshua Tree NP that would justify hauling the bikes 6000+ miles? If not, we need to decide if its worth taking them just for tooling around the parks. Somehow I assume there's some good riding.
School me on the must do stuff in the area. We are clearly not averse to driving but since we're driving 3 days to see these parks, hitting a taco truck in LA probably won't make the to do list. Any must do hikes in or near JTNP? We'll probably have 5 or 6 days. Generally 2 or 3 days hiking, 1 or 2 days riding and a possible wildcard day. What do you suggest?
Trip will be around Aug 31 of 2017 and we hope to be in a 25 foot camper. We are also ALL about dispersed camping so if there are any national forest gems where we can camp for free or nearly free next to an alpine lake or something, that's always preferred to full hookups in a hamster colony campground.
Go.
