Let's be clear: laying it down *IS* crashing, indisputably so. The only variable is how much of that is choice.

Exactly. To wreck in order avoid a wreck is still wrecking.

The moment it's laid down, you have abdicated control and replaced the higher stopping friction of brakes and tires with the more slippery plastic and metal.

[Note: I know the reference but (surprisingly?) I never watched the show.]

Assuming a bridge collapsed in front of me, and I needed to intentionally crash, bail off, "lay'r down," whatever...

I would have no idea how to intentionally start this process.    I think I'd probably stand on the rear brake and crank on the bars and try to skid like I was on my old bmx bike back in the grade school days.

How does one intentionally, and *relatively* safely induce a low side?

I kind of have this question as well?

I remember reading how to in a motorcycle rag (clearly that was what it was) back in the 70s.

..just to hear the ABS going "buzzzzzzz."
You never see a motorcycle parked outside a psychiatrists' office.

I also think, in the time it takes to decide whether or not there is time to stop, and then do whatever I need to do to crash on purpose -- I would either have already unavoidably actually crashed, or if not - could have just stopped.

The way my brain works lately, I think I would have just ridden off the edge while thinking "what should I do"

Yep fast reflexes, thats me

Showing you the way, leaving no doubt,
Of the way on in or the way back out.

I am guessing that to "lay'r down" with a bike without ABS the procedure is:
1-freak out
2-stomp the rear break, the front brake is dangerous don't cha know
3-lock up the rear wheel
4-stay on the rear brake
5-turn away from or target fixate
6-the rear goes sideways
6-stay on the rear brake
"lay'r down....I meant to do that" At least that's what I said when I threw my CB350 down the road in 1971. My dad gave me a complement after I explained the crash. I accepted the complement with grace ;D
7-let up on the rear brake and high side.

With ABS I guess the rear will just buzz until you run into whatever :-\

IIRC the article said to stomp the rear break to cause it to break loose, swing the rear out to the side, push hard on your down side foot peg, pull that leg up clear, and then (with both feet) push the bike away from you using the seat or whatever you could reach.

As complex as that sounds, good braking techniques would be more effective and easier to remember.
