Okay-I need help
« on: August 19, 2016, 02:25:08 PM »
The Griso is STILL awaiting insurance approval for repair.

In the meantime, I'm trying to get my little single cylinder TU250XW going. And I'm not having much luck.

I rebuilt it last year and lent to a bikeless "friend", who undid all of my work.

I have had to put a new tank, petcock and carb on it. It was running earlier this week and has now ceased to run.

Fueling-should be okay now.

Spark-it's there, but not strong. I'll put an iridium spark plug in tomorrow.

Timing is okay. Rockers are properly set up and gapped. A new coil is on order, in case that's it.

What else should I be looking for?

I've rebuilt bikes before, but now I'm puzzled.

Make sure it's not a fueling issue.  Will it start with a few puffs of starting fluid?

Not a wimper of a fire. Could still be fuelling, tho.

If you gave it a snort of starting fluid and it still doesn't give any indication of life - I'd be in the spark camp.

Looks like you need a higher help.

Seriously-spark. Had a Honda like that, weak spark, borderline. No fire even on ether.

Iridium spark fitted. No joy. New (Chinese-I'm not spending 3100 on Suzuki stuff) on its way.

You can have spark at atmospheric pressure but when installed in a wet compressed environment it's insufficient for combustion. Check the resistance of the various components. I'd suspect the coil/high tension lead in the damp climate it's subjected to.

My guess too.

Check the battery voltage, a week battery could give you week spark.

Next, carbon core or solid core spark plug wire. If carbon core, take it off and warm it in the oven for a while (helps dry them out) moisture in the plug wire could also cause a week spark as well.

Till the morning comes, it'll do you fine.

Battery is fine. I installed a brand new gel battery and voltage is good.

Yesterday, I did something I should have done first. Pulled the spark plug again and sniffed for fuel. No fuel. It's the new carb. I'll strip it today.

I now have fuel to the cylinder. Still won't start. I'll wait for the new coil.

Have you checked compression?  Low compression will do this too.  Could point to a simple valve adjustment or worst case, piston rings/cylinder wear.

Compression seems good. Valves adjusted.
