So many Alps, so little time
« on: March 24, 2016, 02:52:57 PM »
The next birthday has a zero in it and I want to celebrate it on the road that goes up and down and round and round a lot. Being reasonably fluent in German, I'm thinking about Germany, Switzerland, Austria. I'm comfortable driving there. The options are to DIY or to take a tour. The question isn't where but how.

Let the fun begin...

Don't forget to visit me in the UK. A bed awaits.

Anyone offering a self-guided tour? Best of both worlds?

Well, I have a bunch of German magazines with various routes (and in the articles it's always sunny or cloudy at worst - how do I get that???). I can paste something together from them. The remaining challenges are a bike (BMW non-GS - a K preferred over an RT - age isn't a primary factor) and accommodations (odds of making a drop-in work without winding up in a hostel or tent). A string of hotel or pension reservations would be seriously confining (gotta get to Hotel Wienerschnitzel even though another route/destination makes more sense).

Then I say get a K bike, a start point and an end point and go where the wind blows ya! Much better stories that way.  8)
Staying tuned...........

Ah, yes, but where do I get a K I'd do the trip with? Unfortunately, the German magazines assume the riders are supplying their own rides.

BTW, there are three(!) German (German language, published in Germany, sold in Europe) magazines that are almost exclusively about the sort of rides seen in Ride Reports. Don't buy them. They'll break your heart.

A K series would be cheap

Well... Um... Yeah, the trick is to find one. I briefly thought about buying a K1200RS, my current ride... Not unless the Euro drops like the Canadian dollar.
