Congratulations!

Flyer took me to a KTM Demo Day and I test rode the SA.  I loved it.

Honestly the motor on this bike is something else. Glad you got a chance to try one out.

I have just about got my break in miles on her for her first service and thought I would update this thread with some thoughts.

The U.S. version of this bike gets larger turn signals with incandescent bulbs while the rest of the free world gets LED smaller signals. It's kind of somewhere on my wish list later on down the road. Here's a link to the parts to replace them in a kit with the proper resistor.

The horn is very anorexic, I meant to the point of being silly and I need to address this sooner rather than later.

The stock panniers that come with it are really a bad design on several fronts. They open from the side which leads to your gear dumping out. Probably just a preference of mine but I prefer a top opening pannier. The locking system is keyed to the bike which is nice but it's super tough to get them to work properly. A lot of pushing and shoving to get them to close properly. I've read that a shot of silicone on the lock helps. When you use the key I can't seem to find the secret handshake to get the lock to open consistently. It's hit or miss.

They do have grab handles on the plastic ends that are very convenient.

The outer skin is very fragile. Here's a pic of when I swung my leg over the bike my boot lightly touched the skin and promptly left a ding in it. Argh! I will be selling these soon and replacing them with something more robust.

There's the SAS canisters tucked up under the seat where the tool roll would normally go. Many folks just removed them and routed lines to the ground. I thought about it but I'm going to leave them on till the warranty expires. I don't want to give KTM a reason to pushback on a warranty claim. So I have some ideas for carrying the tools I'll share later on down the road when I get to it.

A few minor issues that need attention with I take it in for the first service. I'll have them address the pannier issue. There's a 12V cig adapter on the dash and the cover won't stay seated, it pops open 30 seconds into the ride. I tried bending the tabs on it to no avail. There a clunk in the front end only riding in comfort mode and going over speed bumps. There's a thread on ADV called "The Clunk Gremlin" where others have had this issue and it seems that many are having to beat on KTM to fix it.

Nicest tool set I've ever received in a bike. Major props to KTM for this.

I feel like all I've done is gripe about some the small issues on this first year bike. My apologies if I'm coming across in this manner. What ever short comings this bike may have, I would buy this bike again in a second! The motor, fuel mapping and suspension are amazing. To me it's that damn good.

More to come as I put some miles on it. I try to post the good and the bad and hopes that it helps someone in their decision process. As always thanks for reading my dribble.

One other notable thing regarding the install of my GPS. KTM Powerparts has one that mounts to the windshield supports. Many folks abandoned that mount because the windshield buffets under speed so much making it problematic to see the GPS. I opted to go with the SW-MOTECH Quick Release GPS Mount from Revzilla, $89 delivered. So far I like it but it does obstruct the view of the tach a little. There's not much room to place and electronics as the cockpit is small.

Time for a quick update on my bike.

The dealer handed me these parts and said they look ugly on the bike so they left them off? I'm assuming they're some kind of extension on the rear fender so I'm going to make them install this and I'll decide later if it stays or goes.

Next up I was handed two of these brackets and was told they were for the passenger grab rails. I knew this was not correct and figured I'd research it when I get home.

It turns out these brackets are to be mounted to the windshield. It serves two purposes, 1) to separate/space the windshield from the smoked colored sub-windshield 2) you can reverse them to add or shorten the adjustable windshield another inch or two. To add insult to injury since the bike wasn't set up properly the sub-windshield and the clear windshield rubbed on each other and they are both marred. I called and emailed pics and asked when my new windshield will be ordered so it's there when I get my first service.

Damage to the sub-windshield.

And the windshield.

And of course one of the bolts and rubber washers is missing as well.

More to come on this issue and how they handle it.

the fender extension "thingy" is an adapter for different style/size license plates. It is ugly and flops around a bit. I just drilled appropriate holes for my plate. the windshield issues would be a dealer setup issue, the bike looks similar to this in the crate:

Next up, I ordered replacement panniers from https://www.advmotorrad.com/. I ordered Bumot's which are hand crafted in Bulgaria. I'm super excited about these panniers and hope they serve me well.

Unboxed. I ordered them in Frost Gray and they're a tad darker than I expected but I think the color matches the 1290 SA just fine.

I also ordered the lockable tool box that nicely fits in-between the pannier and the bike. Remember earlier that I stated the US versions of this bike have the evap system under the seat where the tools normally go and I have some ideas? This is what I was referring to.

Here's a pic of the rack installed with a good view of the toolbox. I should note that it is waterproof.

Here's a good view of the rubberized gasket making the tool box waterproof.

I have my OEM tool bag, Leatherman, duct tape, flashlight, JB Weld and tire repair kit tucked in there for starters.

The pizza box is on order and should be here later this week. They have a back rest that should be released in the next couple weeks. They have two sizes on the top box, I opted for the 41L.

Thanks for reading my thread.

Thank you sir! I appreciate the input as I'm a little sketchy on what the dealer states at this point based on what my experiences have been so far.

Nice looking tractor boxes! The lockable/waterproof toolbox is a great addition.
Scary tuff about the dealer set-up. I take it you are double checking everything they did now? (oil?)

Big time! Honestly, I've reached the point in my life that no matter what work I have done at any dealer, it's a matter of how much is not done appropriately, not if. A gentle reminder for everyone to check over any dealer work on your bike with a magnifying glass.

Thanks for reading!

My pizza box/top case came in and I promptly installed it right away. The top box will get the yeoman's work as it's much easier to get on and off the bike without the side panniers. Really nice welds, fittings, hardware and in general build and keyed to match the panniers. I'm really happy with the choice so far.

There's a backrest pad in the making that should be available in less than a month from this update. I'll purchase is and update this thread when I get it. A must have item when you have a passenger on the back.

Well packed in bubble wrap, double boxed.
