Snowmobiles - And those that love them
« on: December 05, 2013, 02:50:08 PM »
I have an old SkiDoo that still is fun to ditch-bang. I would like a new 800 Renegade but don't have the extra kidney to sell.

What do you tear up the snow on?

My family in Northern Minnesota usually use a 4 wheeler in the snow.  They haven't broken out snowmobiles in years.

A pair of 1980 Yamaha Enticer 340's.  I started with one, then two:

They ran so good our club expanded.  This shot is from a "boy's" weekend up at my parent's cabin doing some trail riding:

That's seven, all between '78 and '81.  Our "club" now has 11 of the same model.  We tend to ride them pretty hard:

and they seem to take it pretty well.  One of mine lost spark- I pulled the head to check it, and one of the bearings had failed (it was still running) so I rebuilt the top-end.  I just need to sort out the spark and we're back in business.  We always have our eyes open for them!

Of course they're no modern 100MPH all-week ride machines, but the highest price anyone has paid was $600, so that's pretty good I think.
I wonder how many "been there" maps I can put in here?

The old Yamerhamer Enticer 340s were one of the best by a long shot. If any of you guys are in the market my sons Artic Cats are for sale.  8)

Back in the day when I was a nut on a sled I loved them all. My last sled was a V-Max

Gotta love those yammi's...

`bought an SRV from a buddy. Light-n-Lively. Good times!

Sold it before moving to Colorado as it's not a mountain sled.

No. It's my brother's. He wanted to sell it but I said, I'll store it and do the mechanical work on it - in turn for storage and work I'll be able to drive it - you just decide what you want to do with it.

It's been in 100% storage since driving it from Huntington Beach CA to Rockford IL. It was carted out to CO (where both of us are) and it's still in storage.

My perspective is that it would be a car that would be well enjoyed many years from now.

Mechanically, it's in decent shape aside from blowing a quart of oil every 150 miles [likely the rear seal] (I purchased oil by the caseload on the CA > IL trip - the clutch hung in there _just enough_ to make it to IL). Body has some minor work needs though I do not recall there being much, if any, rust.

He thought about converting to metal bumpers and spoke/knockoff spinner wheels but I believe he has been talked out of the wheel conversion.

No telling when he'll start working on it.

As kids we had a JD 300 that I used to get stuck all the time. Then we upgraded to a 1981 JD Spitfire. It was light and had absolutely no suspension, but was a nice upgrade. My friends in the farm country had Yamaha SRV, Enticers, one had a Roll-o-flex, SnoJet, and a Cat Puma.

My 670 went to the mountains. I blew my knee but had a lot of fun with the purple tank.

The windshield had a spectacular death about 30 minutes after that photo...

Jim you'll probably know where that was. Great Western Trail along IL64 between Sycamore and Lilly Lake. (IL47)
