I don't believe it was necessarily Vale's fault for Marquez's off.

The two were having an epic battle.  In turn 14, Rossi had the preferred line and tracked out at exit.  That's a total legitimate race tactic.  However, he slowed significantly and he was looking over at Marquez as he was tracking out.  If you look closely, Marquez leaned into Vale and went down.  At nearly the same moment Marc leaned into Vale, Vale's outside foot came off his peg making it appear that Vale kicked him.  I don't see that Vale kicked him.  He was thrown off by Marc turning into him.

The problem for Vale is his actions make him look guilty of taking Marc out of the race.  If Vale simply kept his eyes ahead, tracked out, and slow up a bit, it would not have been viewed the way it was.

Unfortunately, Race Control does not agree with my "expert"  assessment.

Quote
Race Direction decided to penalise Rossi by starting him from the back of the grid at the next and final race of the season in Valencia. He retains his seven-point lead from Lorenzo so if the Spaniard wins in that race, Rossi will have to cross the line right behind him in second place to win his tenth title.

It sure looked like an intentional dick move by Rossi to me Doug. Maybe he didn't intend for Marc to fall, but it was unsportsmanlike IMO. Had he not been watching over his shoulder the whole time I might chalk it up to a racing incident.

I realize I'm going to be in the minority with this opinion.  But, I stand by the fact that if Rossi kept his head and eyes forward, it would have been viewed differently.

Vale should have known better to not look at Marc as he was pinching him on exit.  Looking over at Marc must have been some sort of an intimidation tactic. It was not wise and ithae cost him the championship this year.

You guys should see the helicopter shot from directly overhead. It shows what R Doug has said.

That shot and Marc'ie Marc's onboard bike shot show Marc leaning into Rossi then going down.

Unsportsmanlike, yes, but also understandable given Marquez' sole racing intention was to cause Rossi to lose the championship.

Which he has effectively done.

Mission accomplished.

For the weekend's best ironic moment award, we have the HRC official statement:

"For the Repsol Honda Team what happened today is something we never want to see in racing, as it is unacceptable that a rider would intentionally create a dangerous situation causing the crash of another rider. We love motorsport and we like to see riders competing for victory, but there must be a limit and mutual respect of each other."

I was on for a MEGA points day until the old GOAT knocked down MM93...

Gonna get that old man

What goes around, comes around. Marky Mark took himself out of contention early in the season. The old goat called him out Thursday and mm93 responded by doing exactly what the old goat predicted. Marquez has tried to "engage" Rossi multiple times this season. Heck, I saw m&m's pass the old goat multiple times during the race, and the candy coated rider made no effort to separate himself to catch Lorenzo. He instead slowed up and took some unusual lines. Just like the old goat.

Bottom line; don't be so obvious and Don't Fuck With Rossi.

I feel like MM just stole from the fans a fantastic finish to the season. He knows full well that any rider that is not in contention for the title needs to do what he can to not interfere with those fighting for the title. If MM was faster than VR, then make a clean pass and clear off. If MM was not faster that VR then he shouldn't engage in a back & forth for several laps while the other title contender pulls a gap. Call it an unwritten rule - but the reason it is there is because it respects the other racers and respects the fans by allowing a title chase to be decided by the contenders, not the guys that have fallen from the title chase. VR's response was not acceptable but somewhat understandable. I lost respect for both riders today, but much more for MM.

Look at the lap times, and it's clear that MM was going a second a lap slower than the leaders whenever he was in front of Rossi.

MM had the pace to run the same times as the leaders. He qualified with a 1:59.4 and was running 2:01s or slower when ahead of Rossi.

MM was sandbagging and dicing with Rossi on purpose.

I think that what race control said pretty much sums it up....

MM didn't make contact, and didn't break any "rules", but was riding in a way that (intentionally) caused problems for Rossi.  Rossi reacted, but unfortunately reacted in a way that is against the rules.

BOTH riders were at fault for this incident, but I think the 3 point docking of points is fair because Rossi could have very easily have finished 4th, instead of 3rd, IF MM does not go down.  MM needs to be reprimanded and told if this happens in the last race he will be black flagged and fined.

Things like this are not good for anybody involved.
