We went in late October 2013, so tar snakes were not an issue. Very cold at the top circle area. No cars, no campers, no people but us.

I liked the cattle guard right at the start.  An auspicious beginning.  All my best local rides involve a few cattle guards.

Have you seen this video?

It features a cattle grate or two.

Nice!  I envy your sightlines.  Here's a bit of a local ride, the cattle guards start soon after this:

Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation.

That looks like a sweet chunk of road, but riding into the rising sun like that is always tough.

Wow - I forgot how prevalent tar snakes can be! I can't say that I miss them at all. Looks like a nice stretch of road to ride anyway

I'm replying late but I do believe its the same road.  Most of the corners are a spider web of tar snakes which did discourage me from doing any really spirited riding but it was still a fun road.  There is a beautiful campground at the top.  Its also a popular trail head for the Sierras.

I rode through Independence and I saw the sign for Onion Road and I thought of this thread.  I could not check it out because I was trying to beat a storm on my way to Big Bear, but next time I will check it out.

Thanks for posting the pics and review.
