Talk me away from a ZX-14
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:13:21 PM »
Other than insurance (I already have a request in to my agent for what the change would be), give me a reason why I should not replace my perfectly running and well modified (for me) 2006 Sprint 1050 ABS with 18,500 miles with a 2008 ZX-14 with 3000 miles?

I'm ready to actually push the sale of the Sprint, dropping the price and selling the extra parts separately, or trading it in for this ZX-14.

I loved the Busa I rode for 2 days, I love my buddys' K1300S (lot's of seat time on both), and really enjoyed the refined feel of the ZX-14 I rode (although it was in the rain). Ergos were also fine, altho the one I'm looking at already has bar risers installed (otherwise stock).

I love my Sprint, but new bikeitis strikes and I've never had a superbike, despite a serious love (and awe) of the effortless power these bikes have. While I've never really pushed the K1300 or ZX-14 I've ridden, I did push the Busa in some high and slow speed turns, and the handling doesn't seem all that far off the Sprint with stock suspension (from what I can remember). The ZX-14 suspension is fully adjustable like the Busa.

Any reason I shouldn't do this? It would be for my 46 mile highway/tollway commute, trips back and forth from Chicago to Michigan (200 miles each way, 7-10 trips a summer), other touring and dedicated day rides. I live in Illinois. I'll still have my 2003 Tuono.  Give me any subjective or objective reason I should keep the Sprint, no matter how ridiculous. I'm thinking ride over to the shop with my title in hand and some cash and make them an offer for trade.

THanks,

- Dan

The Sprint sucks. Sell it to me & buy the Ninja.

Bring cash to Clays (although I'm not sure how I'd get home...). Or maybe we swap the Sprint for the S3 for a couple weeks and then you decide what you're willing to pay, hmmm?

The only value I can add, is that Kevin Stevens owned both a ZX-14 and a K1300S.  Comparing these two bikes was a common discussion between us.

While talking about it one day, he openly lamented to me that selling his ZX-14 was a mistake.

He sold it for an S1000RR (in 2009?).  Then sold that for the K1300S in late 2012.  The K1300S was in a horse-race with a new ZX-14 at the time.  The only thing that stopped him is that the "old" ZX-14 is no longer made, and instead the ZX-14R is the replacement.  He felt the differences of the "R" might mess with the otherwise perfect bike that is/was the older non-R bike.  That, and he just wanted to give the K13 a go.

um,

I have no basis to NOT buy it. I have one and I can attest that the Hulk is a blast. much better than the Busa.

there. I'm the anti-buyer...  oh wait, maybe not. lol

You're asking a forum full of enablers to talk you out of a bike??

Good point, but if there's a hater out there with intimate knowledge of the bike, I'd like to hear what he says before saying goodbye to the Sprint - perfectly sorted and suited to my needs, less bad night lighting....

Should be hearing from insurance agent tonight. Emailed me earlier asking how many cc's...

So the insurance agent says... When I renew as of August 1, if I replace the Sprint with the ZX14, it is basically double the Sprint...

Quote
Renwal Term
366.00  Sprint
170.00  Tuono
---------------------
536.00  Total

Renewal With Kawasaki
720.00  Kawasaki
246.00 Tuono
-------------------------
966.00  Total

When replacing the Sprint with the Kawasaki the Tuono increases. I called Progressive to ask why, they explained that the Kawasaki is a performance vehicle so the assumption is that you would drive the Kawasaki less and the Tuono more which then increases that rate. I only quoted with Progressive, but  I'll shop around tomorrow and see what we can do for you.

$430 extra a year? Let's see what else she can find when she shops. Do these numbers seem out of line?

But why Jack up the price on the Tuono? I'll shop around, but if I get the deal I want on the zx, I'll pay the insurance.

Hope they still have it next week.  Or maybe tomorrow after work...

really? WOW! you need to shop around. if my insurance jumped that much from buying the 14r, I would have been getting a check from insurance for my last bike. I only pay 420/yr now full coverage.

Safeco is even more expensive - $994 for both the Kaw and the Ape.

They are checking State Farm and hopefully a couple others...

Don't think this will deter me - I paid $782 combined for the Sprint and Tuono last year, so going up to $966 is $184 over last year (but next year is only $536 for Sprint and Tuono...tough call)

Insurance is regional in nature.  It's hard to compare one state with another.

This may sound nutty but this I what I did

I was renewing & adding a bike to my policy on the phone with the agent.
It seemed that the order on the policy had an outcome on the price. By putting the KLR on as the first bike and the R1200GSA as the last lowered the total bill even though the KLR is at less then 1500 miles a year and the GSA is more than 10K per year.

I can not explain it but it did lower the bill by about $100 a year :headscratch:

From a long time ZX owner (bought one of the first 2006 models, replaced with a 2008 after I was hit) the R is better.  Smoother.  More power.  ABS.  More info in the dash cluster.  But still that same ZX feel.  I want a new one.

FYI, ZX-14 with OEM lights is one of the best I've seen, but add HID's to the mix and it becomes THE best.  At night I can see the entire highway, both lanes, shoulders, and off into the brush, as well as a nice distance ahead, and that's just with the low beams.  Throw the high beams on and it's like I flipped a switch on the sun.
