In general you just need a couple of signs. We had a system in the last house but when we moved, we took the signs with us. They were put up out front of the new place.
Two weeks later, a burglar broke in to the house across the street, then broke a window in the neighbor's house to the right of us, then walked into the front door of the neighbor's house to the left of us (they left the front door open!) and took money from a wallet sitting on the dining room table.
And that weekend, the home security weasels were knocking on doors trying to sell security systems.
Now I have to say that my main floor (I'm in a ranch with a full matching basement) doesn't have much in the way of memorabilia. The TV in the Keeping Room is a 17" LCD sitting on top of a DVD player which is on top of a VCR. The TV in the Living Room is a 52" that needs 2 people to move that is mounted on the wall. There's a DVD player and Cable box under the TV on a stand. The stereo is 20 years old. Standard living room furniture (two smaller couches, one large couch, a couple of foot stools and a couple of end tables). Keeping room has a couch and a chair. There's a cat tree. The dining room has a simple table and four chairs. The middle bedroom is the library with a crapload of books. The back bedroom is storage with a bunch of boxes mainly.
I keep things clean and picked up with gear put away. Most of the hobby gear is in the basement or garage. Main computers, guitars/amps, games.
Add the ADT signs and there isn't much to appeal to a random burglar.
