My two aunts are antique hounds as are the daughters; my mother and I prefer more modern lines and watching animals. Majority rules. My mom and I are coming in a day early so we might Oatland Island on Sunday while the others travel. Thanks for that.
It's not easy for them to get on and off buses or clamor out of vans. So local walking, resting, walking, resting is best for them.
Definitely call and ask about the walking distances. I think there is a good bit of Savannah NWR you can see by car if you are planning to rent one, but I don't want to tell you the wrong thing since I lived in the area as a kid and moved away 13 years ago. I do remember seeing a good many benches on River St and in the parks for them to take a rest and maybe some photos.
If any were involved in Girl Scouts then this might be of interest:
http://www.juliettegordonlowbirthplace.org/The carriage and trolley tours were always popular when I lived there. If you do a tour, do it when you first get there in case you see things you want to explore more later. The boat tours of the area waterways were popular as well.
They try really hard to exude southern charm and hospitality, so I'm sure you'd get some good suggestions from the visitor's center if you call or stop by.
