With the riding conditions what they are here in the Texas Panhandle, mostly flat & straight, I find it difficult sometimes to get motivated to go for a ride. I've often enjoyed Daniel Kalal's posts of small town centers focusing less on the mundane terrain and more on the towns. That kinda got me thinking about my weekend rides in this area and my trips thru all these small towns. I was looking for some feature that I could use as destination points and photograph. I suddenly remembered I'd sponsored a contest back in the early 90's with the Houston BMW Club. The contest was to see who could visit the most of the 254 county courthouses in the state of Texas. Now this is no contest by I'm using the courthouse theme as motivation to get out and ride.

Here is my first batch. Feel free to add your own if you want.

Carson County, Panhandle, Texas.
This was the third courthouse built in Carson County. Completed in 1950.

Hutchinson County, Stinnett, Texas
Courthouse completed in 1927.
Former Green Bay Packer Donny Anderson was born in Hutchinson County and graduated from Stinnett High School.

Moore County, Dumas, Texas
Courthouse completed in the 1930's.
Birthplace of Joe "King" Carrasco.

Dallum County, Dalhart, Texas
The third courthouse built. Completed in 1922.

Hartley County, Channing, Texas
Second courthouse built. Completed in 1906.

Courthouse completed in 1912.
The movie Hud (1963) starring Paul Newman was filmed in and around Claude.

Briscoe County, Silverton, Texas
Courthouse completed in 1922.

Second courthouse built. Completed in 1909. Completely remodeled after a fire in 1962.

Castro County, Dimmitt, Texas.
Third courthouse built. Completed in 1940.

Deaf Smith County, Hereford, Texas.
Second courthouse built. Completed in 1910.

Sherman County, Stratford, Texas
Original courthouse built in 1890's. Moved to Stratford in 1902 when the new courthouse was built.

Third courthouse built. Completed in 1931. The first two in 1863 & 1877 burned to the ground. The third, built in 1886, was added on in 1931.

My original intention had been for anyone to post their pics wherever they were. But since I was about the only one posting pics it got moved to Region 2. If enough post from outside region 2 maybe it can be moved to the regular ride reports section.

I have a couple of months to decide. Here in Michigan, it's not what one would call good riding conditions. I'm going to do some farkling on the Speedy & probably buy a Ural & by then it'll be warm enough to decide!  :thumbsup:

Parmer County. Farwell, TX. I'm betting this place is very popular on a Sat/Sun afternoon in the summer. Wouldn't want to pay their water bill though.

Curry County. Clovis, NM. Massive courthouse for the size and population of Curry County.



As a sidebar: If you ever want to see how important the beef and dairy industries are to the Texas Panhandle, try riding the 60 or so miles from Hereford, TX to Clovis, NM. The feedlots, meat packers & dairies stacked one after another.

I am surprised how much this looks like the courthouse for Monongalia County, WV which was built in 1881.

Hemphill County, Canadian, TX.

912 square miles with a population of 3,807. One of 30 totally dry counties in Texas.

I was flagged down by a guy riding a Harley when I made the turn onto Main Street going up the hill to the courthouse. His name was Steve and he was really interested in my 15 year old bike. He also stank of alcohol at 10 AM. We talked for a while. Long enough for us both to smoke a cigarette. He claimed to have a Kawasaki Mach III back in the day. I believe him.

Lipscomb County, Lipscomb, TX.

932 square miles with a population of 3,302. Not much happening up here other than raising cattle and oil/gas.

It was only 26 miles away from Canadian but Steve didn't follow me.
