Company wants quick deployments, 'Agile' deployment.

The only problem is the environment in use by Development doesn't match Production. Neither does the QA environment.

So Development works on systems where they have full root access, wide open systems.

QA works with Development to install and make sure the new system works. They have access to the Developers and don't hesitate to contact them if something doesn't quite work as expected.

It comes over the wall to us in Operations and we try to install per the installation and requirements documentation. Of course things break, stuff's missing, and documentation makes assumptions. So we have to fucking chase down development folks who have been moved off to different projects and don't have time for us or engineers because the way systems work in production doesn't match what they "designed". So we have to engineer our part and the apps guys need to get with us in order to get missing stuff put in place.

Ahhh, so we finally have a mandate. Take over and manage the Lab environment. This way the Engineers build systems according to how things actually work in production.

Hmm, these systems are wide open, remote root access permitted, no user accounts so they log in as the application account names (like oracle), no password to become root. WTFF!!!

Okay, we need to change the environment. I'm tasked with logging in to these systems (breaking in in some cases because no one knows the root password), identifying what needs to be changed, and letting the Eng/Dev/QA folks know what the changes are.

Well, in order to be Agile, the environments have to match. Otherwise things break and we have to spend time trying to get them to work. We want you to spend the time getting things working from the start. That's your fucking JOB!!!.
