Looking for roads between Winston-Salem NC and Boone NC and around Boone

I will be in Winston-Salem Saturday and riding to and around Boone NC on Sunday. I am clueless about the roads between and around Boone. I would like to put together a Boone loop of around 200+ miles. I am looking for twisty backroads. Easy dirt connecting roads are okay as we will be on a Tenere and GS. I do not want to ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway anymore than necessary.

Any suggestion for good roads.

For a scenic ride to Boone from W-S...

*  Head to East Bend, NC
*  From there, go to Level Cross
*  Take 268 to Elkin from Level Cross

Go south and stop by the Shiloh General Store.  If you're early enough on a Saturday, you'll get their homemade donuts... the best I have ever had.  If you're there by lunch, have the lady's make you a sandwich (on homemade bread)

As for rides around the Boone area, the number of quality routes is very high.  In the next reply, I provide some ideas...

The best roads around Boone (IMHO) in order of preference...

*  Rt. 181(look on the map NW of Morganton)   - 10 of 10
*  Rt. 421 from Holston Valley to Mountain City  -  9.25 of 10
*  Rt. 88 from Trade to Warrensville - 9 of 10
*  Rt. 221 from Banner Elk to Grandfather Mountain  8.75 of 10
*  Rt. 194 from Elk Park to Vilas 8 of 10
*  The BRP from Boone south  7 of 10

If you want to explore some nice gravel roads, check out Blowing Rock to Globe to Mortimer to Rt. 181.


No matter how tempting 321 looks on a map, avoid it, especially on a weekend.  Heavy TRAFFIC!

The only Level Cross I can find is south of Greensboro?

This man doesn't even own a motorcycle , I don't know if I would trust his recommendations.
