My 10-year old girl wrote this note to me yesterday.

After my son was able to call from basic training, he told me how much he appreciated all the things I did for him while he was growing up and that now he realized the many life lessons that I taught him and how much better off he was than many others that he was around..

The naive
The street smart
The ones who the judge gave a choice of jail or enlisting

There was the one outlier who enlisted to slip away after a liquor store heist.

cool. At least he realized it once he got out there. There is an amazing number of 18 year olds out there who can't wash their own clothes, don't know how to iron a dress shirt or sew on a button, or safely handle a found firearm, don't know how to clean the dishes or stop a toilet from overflowing, or cook a simple meal, or make their bed, or deal with a bully, calculate gas mileage, or make change, or stick a throwing hawk.

my oldest daughters first year at college she called:
"thanks for teaching me things Dad"
"OK? like what?"
"Like all kinds of things, specially how to change a tire and jump start a car"
"well, ya, that's my job"
" Ya, well I appreciate it, so far this week I had to show 2 boys how to hook up jumper cables and one other idiot how to change a tire. he was so dumb I finally just did it for him"

My daughters' boyfriend is like this. His dad abandoned the family when he was about 10, mom never remarried and raised him and his siblings alone. I show him how to do things, like changing tires or bulbs (on a car, he can change a light bulb I think

He really appreciates it. I never make fun of his lack of knowledge, he's said it's embarrassing. My daughter almost breaks down in tears because it makes her so happy that we can work together and he's learning some basic skills.

I feel sorry for the poor kids who have crappy parents. Had a family, if you can call them that, move in next door a few years ago. had a teenage daughter, probably 10 year old son and another daughter about 8. mom and dad were always fighting and the cops were there a couple times a week. one afternoon the boy comes over pushing his bike and asked if I could put the chain back on. I showed him how to do it and we lubed it up as well as adjusting the brakes so they worked. as he left he said "thanks a lot, my dad doesn't know how to do anything". poor kid was hauled off the next time the cops were out and the rest of them moved out a few weeks later. still bothers me that I didn't do more for the poor kid.

That sounds like me in my 1st year of college. I swear to gods I taught someone new how to do their laundry every freaking week! I had to explain to one of the cheerleaders why you didn't mix red clothes in with the whites.

Good on you 1K for teaching your kids how to do stuff. Fourstring and I are working on that every day with both kids.
