I was poking around ADV to see how others were dealing with this mess and one thing I found out is that Baldy, the grand Poobah at ADV used to own Sumgmug.com which helps fund the ADV site which is a massive beast. He sold smugmug to his sons and it's still in the family and still helping fund ADV. Pretty interesting stuff.

The backlash of this issue is massive and many are predicting PB will tank over this but for now the CEO is standing his ground with the TOS policy changes.

I've only been involved on the far side (so I don't know the full details). Is the ?$399? cost per year? Do they offer a tiered service - low users a lower cost?

I'd think if they came out with a 59 or 99 / year service vastly more folks would say - cha-ching - done and be happy.

Perhaps they've "run the numbers" and know that with the higher cost they'll still end up with more cash in hand (and more PO'd people bashing their name).

In the first post on this thread I posted the tiers. Yes, they have tiers but to have the ability to post links like on this forum the only option is $399.99/per year.

Your browser might have them stored in the cache instead of getting them from PB.

I tolerated the Bucket nonsense with the interface that grew clunkier and clunkier because the pix remained linkable and it was free. I've got six years of photos on Bucket that are not backed up at home so I am going to have to do a buncha download/upload to keep it all.

Not having used Wordpress. Yet. I suspect any files you may have "linked" to PB were actually uploaded to WP and are hosted from their servers. Just a guess. But hosting images on wp IS one of the things you pay for.

Get a domain and web hosting from a company like 1and1 (don't use GoDaddy because they consistently hold on to domains when people want to move them and then let former employees snag up the domain name and hold it for ransom to the owners.

Host all your pictures in space you control, get multiple e-mails that use your domain and are named (or changed) as you want, use their WYSIWYG designer if you don't want to do it yourself.

Smugmug is great! It's worth the $4/month just for the interface. Stuff uploads instantly, you can change the size pic on your hotlinks (I belong to an Airhead board that cuts off anything over 640 wide), and it's downright intuitive to use.

I'll be slowly fixing the broken PB links in Will Ride for Food and my ride reports.
