Follow up note: Liz got a Dell 2-in-1 at Christmas time for $800, including 16gigs of ram, 7th gen i7 processor, 1tb SSD, and some sort of kick ass screen. This thing FLIES. The body isn't as strong or cool as the unibody macs, and I personally am sick of supporting Windows, but holy crap, this is a fire-breathing beast for not much money at all. #foodforthought
Follow up, follow up note: I just got a new work computer; a 15" HP 640 G2 (I think), with 32gig, i7, 1tb ssd, etc., again, it flies and my only regret/wish was that I could just load MacOS on it. It's a cheap ass piece of garbage plastic body that, if it's like my old one, cracks if someone walks too hard in the next room, but the internals are great, and I get all day battery life somehow.
If I can coax my old one out of the boss, I may try to Hackintosh it, because it too is an i7 (previous-gen) SSD with lots of ram.
I still hate Windows, but if you have to use it, it helps to get the most powerful beast you can. They won't buy me the Macbook Pro I really want because at work we're a Microsoft shop, but the latest web stuff I'm working on is platform agnostic, so maybe I can change their minds over the next couple of years. Here's hoping.
