It looks my rear tire is dying a quick death. Sigh... This one (Avon Trail Rider) might be dead in 4K miles. The others (Conti Trail Attack 2) have made it to (almost) 6K. Maybe the extra weight of the luggage is killing it or it simply doesn't last as long. Internet reviews indicated it was not a short lived tire. I doubt it's going to make it to Hancock. Live and learn I guess.

I have a half used spare tire (conveniently stashed at my son's house in NY and now bungied to the bike) and a set of tire irons/etc with me. I may end up doing a parking lot tire change in Stowe tomorrow night or Barre the next. There are a surprising lack of motorcycle dealers in New England.

Chris and I are in Barre Vermont. Long day to get to Hancock tomorrow. 450 miles means an early start and a late arrival (7pm). I got my half used tire mounted a few miles from the hotel tonight for only $32.

Ok it's 7:30, I'm about to go to work. I have a packing list in my head and the bike is not loaded. Work till 2:30 filling teen heads with geographical facts, then home, pack and leave. ETA is between 9 and 10 pm, depending on how many state troopers I see. Or how many see me.

Good times. Visited the eel smoker after 9:00. Then 4 hrs to home. 738 miles on the odo. Thanks to everyone who showed up for the last est(x) at the Capra.

I was going in the opposite direction. Must have been shortly after it happened. Police were on the scene. So I didn't stop. EMS on the way a few miles down the road. Looked like somebody might have cut him off approaching the exit ramp. No, he wasn't wearing a helmet.

Was not the best day of riding I ever had.

About an hour later, my front tire found the edge of this pothole, located on PA 339 between Union Twp and Ringtown.

Amazingly enough, it held air, or rather lost it slowly at a rate of about 1 psi every 3 miles depending how far I leaned it over on right-handers. So I plotted a route home via Sheetz stations. That was easier than unpacking my compressor every 25 or 30 miles. I was about 75 miles from home. Yea, I should know better, I think that pothole has been there since early Spring. It’s just over a slight rise and you can’t see it until you’re in it.

We were taking it easy – maybe 40-45 mph – because that stretch is all beat up. The impact was hard enough to knock both bags off. Scott said they pooped up above my head. I didn’t notice.
