I have the whole week off work, but we can't get on the road 'til at least early afternoon that Sunday, as Liz has a singing gig Sunday mornings.

Well, free time and disposable income are at a premium, so I don't have $300 to throw away on tires just getting there and back, nor do I have a spare 4-6 days just to avoid 700 miles worth of shitty slab.

Also, mentioned above, I don't have anything to prove, either.

Jamie and I are IN for Nationals!

Just made reservations for Mon/Tue/Wed nights. Robert, I've been off the forum for a while and just saw your post about staying in Staunton Saturday night. I'm not sure yet when we'll leave---not sure how many days I can convince Jamie to be away from the kids.

But if I can talk her into leaving Saturday, we'll definitely meet you in Staunton!

Can't wait to ride the whole BRP again---last time I rode it all was for Nationals in...when was it?...can't even remember. (Sad.) Jamie's never ridden it, so that'll be fun (not to mention all the great riding around Maggie Valley).

I have yet to be at any STx event where i know of anyone who followed a planned route more than about halfway. Except maybe MadJack.

but he's a little - well, you know - different.

The Howard Johnson in Staunton is clean, very motorcycle
friendly, within walking distance of downtown and I believe
was only 59.00 a night when I stayed there last year.

Go to Google Maps and type the search string "12 Oclock Knob Rd, Roanoke, VA". It might auto complete as "12 O'Clock Knob Road, Salem, Roanoke County, VA".

I used it to go from 311 to 221 and the BRP by spending as little time in Roanoke traffic as possible.

Beans & I ran into 2 local cruisers at a roadside stop on the BRP who asked us how we got to the BRP. When I mentioned 12 Oclock Knob Rd, they told us that you can't take a motorcycle over that road. It's too narrow, the crown is too high, the shoulders drop off sharply and there are potholes and loose gravel all over the place. Beans had to tell the guy about 3 times that yes, that was the road we just came over before his jaw dropped. I still don't think he believed us.

Not scenic or all that interesting; makes a better story that a shortcut. I wouldn't go seek it out unless you are looking for a technical obstacle course. (Then I'd take some of the roads up to Red Knob.) But we both agreed it was fun. And would probably do it again.

There are several 600 and 700 roads just SW of there. I can never remember which is which, they all run together in my mind. Everytime I head up to 311, I try to find a different one to ride.

Hey, I think 12 o'Clock Road looks GREAT! No different than many of my other favorite goatpath mountain pass roads (like Rt.58 from the BRP down to Vesuvius, VA).

Might have to detour off the BRP to ride it!

Did some vacation planning for 2014 and sadly the National isn't going to happen for me. I hope to make it down that way some time in 2014, but I need to work it in as part of a 3-day weekend (I get every other Friday off) to minimize vacation day usage.

No, it's not the band. Young son is graduating from Univ of Nevada in May, so I have trip out there. There are some dual sport events I want to do with my older son and unfortunately they miss my 9/80 Fridays, so they burn a vacation day each. It's just a weird year.

You have some excellent reasons (not excuses here). Seeing your Son graduate and getting in some quality DS riding with your other Son is very cool! You'll be missed. But, at least Single R will be at the national.
