New bike. Going for inspection on Wednesday. Beautiful day, so I rode to work. On the trip home, I suddenly sense a rhythmic clicking as I ride along. When I get home, this is what I see:

Thankfully, I have a Stop and Go plug kit. A few minutes of work and I'm hoping inspection passes the repair:

What are these inspections that you speak of?

All the state of California cares about is getting the vehicle license fee. They could care less about the condition of the bike.

Or the car. Its amazing here the POS I see driving around belching smoke, half the lights don't work and the tires are bald, yet my 5 year old truck has to pass smog?

I made the mistake of buying used vehicles from no-inspection states in the past. I'm also a former PA inspection mechanic... Say what you will about revenue, but inspection states have safer, better vehicles for the most part.

Being from a no inspection state I would agree, you should see some of the crap that drives around here. I have witnessed a wheel fall off on more than one occasion.

I couldn't believe the hoops you had to go thru getting cars inspected when I lived in Germany. NO RUST of any kind anywhere on the vehicle.

Grew up in pa, got stationed in Florida and was shocked at some of the vehicles I see on the road down in the SE

Quite honestly, body rust was the limiting factor. The dang hermies don't allow any body rust.

However, bondo is good.

I passed PA inspection with my truck and then about a month later Toyota held it hostage to replace the frame.

I understand the reasoning behind inspection, but here in PA doing it every year is a bit ridiculous. Especially considering the amount of new (less than 5 year old) cars on the road. Perhaps when a car is titled and after it gets to a certain age. Otherwise it's just a royal inconvenience and money grab.

I would think a broke ass state like CA would hop on the inspection wagon just to reap the financial rewards.

It was free in NJ when I lived there if you went to a state station. Living in PA since 1996 it did suck having to pay every year. We get A LOT of counterfeit inspection stickers here in the city. Most of those cars have no shot of passing, and during a fatal crash investigation I did, I found a shop forging it's log book so I had the state police shut it down.

I will second that. almost the victim of it too. the wheel falling off.... on the vehicle i was testing for work (auto repair center).

In Alberta, if you buy a vehicle older than 10 years, you can take it to a licensed mechanic of your choosing to get an inspection done, which you have to present to your insurance company before they will issue a policy.

There are no annual inspections.

And, as long as you keep that 10+ year old vehicle perpetually insured, you do not need another inspection.

Let the insurance lapse, even for a day, and you need another inspection.

Makes no sense to me.

So I hear all these stories of POS vehicles in non-inspection states. In Michigan, we are non-inspection, but I don't recall hearing of an accident caused by something that would have been caught in an inspection? Maybe I don't pay attention enough.

Huh, when we moved here we had to get it inspected. And there are emissions vans on a lot of exit ramps which check and snap your license. If you don't go by an emissions van, you'll eventually get a letter requiring you to get inspected. Since I live 5 miles from work, I don't regularly hit an emissions van so I'm expecting to have to get the truck inspected again.

the majority on the road here are fine, its just the Rez runners that are the problem.

Humm, then it must mean the population size of a county in CO determines how interested they are in things like smog. That was true in WA, if I remember correctly. Montrose county is pretty much wide open spaces.

I'm certainly not saying that *all* cars from *all* non-inspection states are death traps. But it's been my experience that in non-inspection states, the type of people who put off car repairs continue to do so until they're far, far worse than they could have been, and many have been in the "you're going to die if you drive this one more mile" category.

For instance, Delaware's brake "inspection" is drive the car into the garage with four skid plates and slam on the brakes. The machine measures that each skid plate moves within the same percentage of tolerance.

I've seen cars with rotors worn to the cooling fence and metal-on-metal brake pads pass Delaware's brake "inspection".

naw, that's them new finangled hi-perf lightweight rotors. only need one side. just like bikes that have only 1 front rotor.

The visible fins are a sign that the car is driven by a woman.

The place that does my bike inspection has been telling me I need new rear pads for 40,000+ miles. Mind you, they never actually measure the pad. They just try it out on the test ride and when they see it does nothing they assume the pads are shot.

Again, it's a money grab.
