Electrical Panel

Damn... I was adding a sub-panel today when I found out my main break in the main panel is bad. I cannot get it to turn off, so it looks like I'll be paying the electric company to come out and pull the meter so I can put in a new panel or is there another option?

I still got the sub-panel in, but I really hate adding breakers to a hot panel.

Any idea how much the electric company is going to charge to come out to pull the meter and then to come back out later in the day to put it back on for me?

Yeah... I really hate dealing with electrical. Low voltage is my specialty, but I'm comfortable enough to do a lot of my own work. Having the proper tools is a big plus. Hot gloves are cool, they are three layers; cotton gloves, thick rubber gloves, and then leather work gloves. You won't be able to pick up a penny wearing them, but you can easily push in a new breaker on a live panel.

To put in a new box I have pulled the meter myself.  Probably illegal, but I snipped the little keychain/seal thing they put on, unlocked it, grabbed the meter by its face and pulled it off, which disconnects the panel.  The next time I saw a truck on my street I just told them my keychain/seal thing was broken and the dude just put a new one on, no questions asked. 

Maybe I got luck with the no questions asked thing.

Well... at least the sub-panel is done. I'll move a few circuits over now, so that will make it easier to replace the main panel.

Last time I did it was about 15 years ago.  Is there a statue of limitations?   ;D

If it was a big deal at the time, the electric guy in the truck didn't say anything.  I told him my clip-deal was broken, he stuck a new one on.  :-\

call the power provider and ask, we allow electricians to pull the meter and we then inspect and reseal it later. If it is a homeowner we don't charge as long as they have a wiring certificate. Typically stop by in the morning and pull the meter (put in a cover), then return in the afternoon to hook it back up.

Yeah... I just found we can pull the meter and Ameren does not charge to re-tag.
