I went to see "The Last Jedi" today. The storyline is very similar to the original movie (Episode IV) with the focus on eliminating the past while looking forward to the future. Interesting. Dan and I saw this recently and we both hated it. Even while in the theatre we'd give each other side-long looks as if to say "Really? This is part of the movie?". there were just so many things wrong with it, for our tastes. Just a jumble of noise and a story that felt thrown together rather than spooled out.

It really is too bad, as I enjoyed Rogue One and The Force Awakens, and was hoping that this movie would round things out.

Yeah, "hate" is a strong word. "Strongly disappointed" is more like it. And a total waste of money (as I indicated earlier that movies here aren't cheap

Just saw it with my wife and son. LOVED IT! I've seen them all when they first came out, except episode IV. This was my second fav. Episode III was my all time fav. It's been over thirty years and I still get enthused.

Re-watched The Force awakens and Rogue One and saw The Last Jedi.

Rogue One remains my favorite out of all of them.

The original is special in that I saw it new in the theater but R1 is definitely my favorite.

After that Lucas seems compelled to write for 8-12 year old kids (ewoks, JarJar Binks, etc.).

Rogue One was very good and had a lot of loose ends to tie, which it did very well. I just didn’t rank it with the three trilogies. It would be in my top three.

Saw "The Enemy Below" (Mitchum 1957) for the first time. Lots of it directly mined for the ST:TOS episode "Balance of Terror". I'd watch it again.

Everything with Ren and Rey was great. I'm ready for them to make beautiful, beautiful Jedi babies.

The rest of the movie was a hot mess. You could tell they had no plan for Finn, hence the horrible casino scene. Also, Leia should have been piloting the main transport, not the Jurassic Park chick.

Black Dynamite: Preface the following with the fact I didn't look at the release date until after the confusion. At first I wasn't sure if it was a spoof of blacksploitation movies of just a really bad example. Once I wrapped my brain around it being a spoof, it was even funnier.

If you ever used to watch Grindhouse/Blackspoitation, then this is worth your time. Not as overtly comedic as "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" since the humor is in the serious-ish nature of presentation.

My nerdy son and I just read Ready Player One. It was more fun for me as a child of the 80s. He liked it though. We went to the movie yesterday and it was pretty good. They changed almost everything but kept the kind of spirit of the book and worked in a lot of recent geek culture also. The book is pretty "light" but fun nonetheless. Movie also.

Watch Moonrise Kingdom on Netflix before they take it off next week. It's weird and beautiful and inventive and funny and different from anything I've ever seen. If you had weird intellectual parents or were in the Boy Scouts or grew up in the early/mid sixties or like Wes Anderson you'll like it. Tons of big stars in roles you wouldn't expect.

The Mrs. and I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday afternoon (what better way to try to get the time-change internal clock reset than a movie on a cloudy day?).

I was impressed. Admittedly I went in expecting to be (knowing that Brian May and Roger Taylor were a huge part of the production), but I admit it went significantly beyond that. Seems that Queens longtime barrister/manager/friend was also one of the driving producers of the film, and all of that showed.

If you know Queen, prepare to sing along with the soundtrack. If you take your kids, prepare for them to not quite understand the magic. It's definitely a flick to tug at the heartstrings through the romance, rock and roll dissipation and triumph. Yes, there were artistic liberties taken. That's a given, and no one NOT involved will ever truly know what happened. But it was good. Rami Malek played Freddie with the an intensity that Val Kilmer would have killed for in The Doors. And I pity him for the prosthetic teeth. The rest of Queen was played impeccably, and the music scenes were coached well enough that I (as a middling musician) truly believed that the actors were playing their instruments.

Credit out to Mike Myers for the single biggest laugh in the whole flick, even if it wasn't strictly history.

Definitely worth a see in the theater if nothing else than the final performance at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid. Interesting tidbit, I swear they used old footage from the actual show on the Jumbotrons for those scenes... I noticed it in passing and thought it an awesome detail.

The new Aquaman movie. Saw it early as part of some exclusive amazon prime member thing or another.

I’m super forgiving of action and superhero movies. Big time. Like... I'll happily rewatch the Green Lantern movie. I'll do that. And the newest Fantastic Four train wreck. I'll do that.

Aquaman....? That might be the worst movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It gives Superman II a real challenge for the title, and that's really, really saying something. It is one of the most awkward, weakly-written, poorly-executed pile of tripe I've seen. It had so much potential with some good names, who have delivered amazing performances in other roles and movies... or brushing their teeth. Horrible direction. Terrible tone and pace. God awful dialog, despite Jason Momoa's generally fun and engaging personality. And for the ladies, he spends half the movie barely covered, and Patrick Wilson is running around looking all buff and tough. And for the guys, Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman, two excellent actresses who are both crazy attractive. Willem Dafoe sleepwalking through this thing, who generally could read the phone book on camera and make it interesting. Dolph Lundred looking human again, and can actually be understood (kudos to his speech coach). None of that can distract you from the god awful tripe. Absolutely terrible movie. I give it a solid 1 out of 5 stars, zero interest in a rewatch, and after DC gave us the Wonder Woman movie, I feel like, surely, they've got more in the chamber for quality, right? Right?

Apparently not.

Went and saw "Mortal Engines" last night. Overall it was good. There are scenes that are lifted straight from Star Wars and once you catch the first one, you can't help but see the others (up to and including the escape from the exploding Death Star).

"Above and Beyond" is an excellent documentary movie about the beginnings of the Israeli Air Force, I watched it on ondemand the other day while I was waiting for the furniture movers to show up. Really interesting story IMO

I liked H8 for the cinematography as much as the story. The acoustic guitar was a real one from that time, borrowed from a museum. It was priceless. The actor that broke it thought they had already substituted the prop guitar and broke the unreplaceable one in the heat of the scene. When you see the look of shock on the actress' face, it was real. She knew it was the historical guitar and was stunned when the actor didn't pause for the prop to be substituted.

I'm glad to hear that @ the El Royale is good. It's been on my radar for a bit.

Saw Venom last night. We all liked it and it's clear to see it setup for the sequel. Also nice to see Stan a few last times.

Saw the ending teaser for the feature animation Spidey after the credits... which is now in theaters. The Spidey Multiverse.

Saw "The House with a Clock in the Walls" last night.

Jack Black movies are uncertain things. This one was good. We had a fun time. It's mostly the kid and the play between Black and Blanchett was very funny.
