They still are, but the key is that the stores don't carry the cheap ones any more. Just replaced the winter blades on my pickup... tried Rainex units last time from the local parts store at $25/ea (give or take). They sucked so badly... wipe was adequate, but durability was $hit. When ice builds up on my wipers, I roll down the window and give them a flip. The cheesy plastic arm connections on these expensive blades left me holding the wiper and putting it back together on the side of a snowy road more times than I care to count.

Here's the thing though... I couldn't get the winter blades from my youth locally. no store carried them (OK, I suppose Wally may have, but I don't shop for necessities there because if I need them so does the other billion sheep). Ended up purchasing via Amazon for $10 each for rubber covered metal Anco winter blades that last a year of full on abuse. Worth it to me to wait in this case. I'm not afraid to flip them in a snow storm any more.

Found out the land we've been leasing for deer and turkey hunting just sold- and the new owner wants to raise the price significantly. Only a little raise for this year, but I think he's going to jack it for next year. Suck.

Walking around the house on this warm, rainy holiday drinking coffee and practicing my draw from holster. I'm sure I look like a complete idiot but it's only Hemi and Kim and they already know. I'm currently using the below set up and I keep it pretty tight for added peace of mind. Said tightness complicates the draw a little so muscle memory is paramount.

Submitted my application to be a volunteer with the local wildlife rehabilitator but, of course, because of stupid COVID-19 they're not accepting new volunteers right now.

I have to find some kind of volunteer gig soon to continue my path to being a certified Master Naturalist.

I JUST WANNA HELP SICK/INJURED CRITTERS!!!

3 out of 5 teachers out in the 7/8 grades at school- I'm one of the two left. Each day get in, run lesson plans and set up tech for subs and so teachers can live-stream to the class from home (for those quarantined or good enough to teach), set up tech so quarantined students can learn from home. We are down 13 teachers right now and only about a dozen kids.

No known spreading at school, and we are fully masked all the time. We are maxed out on subs. The last two days I taught every period, and was on duty for break and lunch- I focussed on Science (my classes) and Social Studies.

Goodness I am out of gas right now. Came home, had two fingers of bourbon, and napped for an hour.

I am SO ready for this to be done. But it's still better than virtual teaching, and as long as we can line up subs, and we aren't spreading at school, I hope we keep at it.

So, I'm pretty much not doing anything that involves other people this weekend. If I go down I don't know what we'd do. So we keep at it!

Oh damn, CLAY. That is awful. We just got notification today that Harper is pulling back all classes to being 100% online for the rest of the semester, starting the 23rd. 15k cases in Illinois today and the surge has just begun.

Got a call from Brother-O-Mine.

Him: I just put a pork roast in the slow cooker. You up for dinner at 6 this evening?
Me: Sure! What should I bring?
Him: Nothing, it's a pot roast so has all the sides in it.
Me: How about home made whole wheat bread.
Him: Um... okay but I'm not a big bread eater.
Me: I'll get it started right away.

Him [after dinner]: Care to leave some of that bread?
Me: You can have it all (3 slices from the loaf for dinner).
Him: COOL!

[The pot roast turned out well, too. Thankfully for my diet, it was the only thing I ate all day, so the 2 slices of bread I had didn't blow out my carbs or calories for the day.]

As a historian I have to say the Soviets won it for all of us. The Red Army suffered horrendous losses, as did the Soviet civilian population. Convoys from Canada kept Britain alive long enough for us to beat the Germans in the air and prevent an invasion, while the Brits, Aussies and Canadians, along with Indian and other colonials defeated Rommel and the Italians in the Balkans and middle East. While FDR did ease into the conflict with lend lease using shitty 4 stackers as convoy escorts, which granted were marginally better than the whaler based Corvettes we had, it wasn't until USS Reuben James was torpedoed in '41 that you were even allowed to shoot back. The US Merchant Marine was in the conflict for the Atlantic more or less from the start so hats off to them, however if Hitler hadn't declared war on the US there's a damn good chance you would not have entered the war at all considering the isolationist sentiment at the time. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was what really got the US involved, and that was after Britain and the Dutch, Canadians, Indians and Burmese were already fighting the Japanese, other than Burma without much success after the fall of Singapore in '42. I'd say that the US Navy and USMC defeated Japan in the Pacific, you definately didn't "win it for us" in Europe, at best you prevented the Soviets from taking over.

I took a little break from social media while having a hernia repaired. I guess all this fitness I've been doing this past summer lead to a small tear in my abdomen, and I needed a patch. Laparoscopic procedure, easy recovery.

I had a surprise in my mailbox this morning. A thank you card and a gift certificate. One of my neighbors is confined to a wheelchair, and she usually has help from a cousin with various chores, including taking out the trash and recycling. The cans were out a day early (prior to my surgery), I assumed the cousin wouldn't be available on trash day and just put them out. But it was uncharacteristically windy and the cans blew over twice. I picked up the trash and put the cans right both times. I didn't think anyone saw me. But someone must have.

Put on the final trim boards on my chicken coop / run project i have been working on all summer. Just need to do some touch up paint and grading around it come spring. Momma and the chicks are all happy. Pretty pleased with how it turned out myself.
