Since not everyone likes guns and the killing of animals this might be a good place for hunting post as well. I haven't been hunting since moving to California. Quite sad actually.

So whatcha hunting?

Everything I've killed in the last two years has been on the bike. I got tired of going out and not seeing anything year after year. I'm down to the last two deer roasts in the freezer so I guess I'll need to head back out sooner rather than later.

Here in PA if you don't put in for a doe permit on the first day to do it in August you pretty much can't get one. Legal bucks are few and far between around here as well.

Deer. The rut is on, so be careful. The problem by us is that most of the corn is still up.

Gun opener next Friday. Woohoo! I got the backpack remote for my GoPro, so I'm hoping to use it to get some up-close and personal footage...

Whoa! Is that a MI buck? Where was he? It's a dandy!

Nothing with the bow this year. I passed on a few does hoping for a buck; since they logged our hunting land they took all my good acorn-producing oaks. This has resulted in fewer does and bucks while the corn is up. I wanted to keep the does around to lure in bucks. No joy. Gun opener is this Friday. I have a remote for my GoPro. I plan to put it in a strtegic spot on the ground and hopefully get some close-up on-the-ground footage.

Yup. That deer was from Saranac. I know of another guy who took a really nice 12 this morning. Not sure where, exactly, but locally.

Bahh!!! So far the hunting this fall has been pathetic. No rain to speak of so the ducks haven't moved south yet. Our local dove spot is dry since the landowner decided to forgo planting corn or wheat this year. Turkeys have been a bust as well. Didn't draw any mule deer or elk tags over in Nevada.

Don't even get me started on deer hunting in California. It's been horrendous for as long as I can remember on public lands...and not getting any better....thanks to the "wonderful" management programs of our Department of Fishy Cops.

Hopefully, some wild pigs will feel my wrath this fall.

I posted this on the "other site". We were hunting in central Minnesota last weekend. Deer population is really down, but it was great to get out with my FIL and his old time hunting buddies and my BIL and his kids. My FIL is 93 and one of his buddies is 95. Maybe the oldest hunters in MN...

Popped a doe today-a big one. Video to follow later. I had the remote gopro on the ground about 25 feet from her when I shot. The sound is very interesting. I've never heard the receiving end of a shot. I might try to get another one tomorrow closer if it works out.

About 85-90 yards probably. The camera was at about 75 or so.

Deer hunting here started today and was colder than a witches hat...or something like that. First time in as long as I can remember our group was skunked on opening day. Bummer.

Pushed a couple pieces Friday. Very few deer, but we kicked out 6 coyotes.

They aren't eating deer much, but the deer certainly do not hang out in places that are infested with coyotes. We got two of them:

The smaller one on top is actually an above average sized female. The male on the bottom is the biggest coyote I have seen. I should have thrown something on there for scale. The thing was the size of a smaller German Shepherd (although not as heavy).

Yesterday I had a button buck and a small buck on front of me much of the monring. Finally the button buck found the bedded small buck and began hassling him:

It was pretty funny. I was looking for a nice buck or another doe. Luckily my brother had two nice does come by, and he shot both of them- great shots, very little meat damage. It would be good to get at least one more in the freezer. Our gun season is closed now with muzzleloader opening next Saturday for three weekends. We shall see how that goes!

Doe with the muzzle loader today. It's a TC Omega- a real tack driver. Got her at about 120 yards.

So my mom gave me a box of stuff- I found these pictures:
My our old hunting rig. 1969 3/4 ton Chevy, homemade flatbed with removeable camper top on it. We spent many nights out in thew woods sleeping on the back of this thing. I'm on the roof- I had just shot my first deer with a bow- an 8 point (I got it mounted). My buddy Mark is cleaning on the truck. I shot it through the heart.

My dad was gone somewhere, so the first stop was my grandma and grandpa's house. She was either so proud of me or I was so excited she had me bring the heart in her kitchen, set it on a plate and put it on her table so she could take a picture of it. The arrow was still in it:
