It's this fantastic invention that you put this vinyl disk thingy on it and a needle on sits on top of it. It turns round and round and is hooked to a thing called a recever with these two things called speakers and makes fantastic sounds.

Just got back from a used record store in Long Beach with my son. We bought several albums including a VG+ Led Zep IV which just ended. Getting up now to slip on Nursery Cryme by Genesis.

Well, 30 years ago, early adopters used the CD as a way to declare their moral superiority over the rest of audiophilia . . . .

Today, in a strange reversal of roles, turntables seem to be serving the same purpose for the grandchildren of early CD adopters.

I was an early adopter and I still have all of the CD's I bought back then that sound like shit because they were mastered for analog. I also still have a turntable (not my original) and I buy both big plastic discs and small plastic discs. The remastered DSOTM on SACD is absolutely stunning and the new 180 gram pressing of "Sketches of Spain" that I grabbed last month is equally impressive.

I'm waiting on new pinch rollers for my (originally purchased by my dad and used for many years) Pioneer RT-909 reel-to-reel...the seminal way to rip and play multiple albums.

Both of my boys have turntables and one is a vinyl snob, eschewing CD's...but willing to listen to MP3's streamed...makes me scratch my head.

I have no grandchildren. So there.

I gave up my reel-to-reels and turntables et al . . . . .my hearing, after a lifetime of enthusiasm, can't tell the diffeence between sources any more . . . . .much like my wine-related palate -- I can tell teh difference between MadDog 20/20 and a 50 dollar bottle of good wine, but that's about it ;-}

My hearing is still remarkably good despite my tinnitus therefore I keep my turntable, and RTR. MP3s, and streaming are fine for casual listening, but the difference is obvious to me in my home studio. Even with my mediocre gear.

My hearing hits a brick wall filter between 16-17KHz...which ain't bad for a lifetime of loud music, riding sans earplugs for more miles than I've ever ridden with earplugs, airplanes, loud cars and tinnitus. I can still discern sources readily enough and I find that I do more critical listening than in my rock and roll turn it up to 11 past, although I still loves to crank up some Zep, Zappa or even Zevon when mood strikes, the wine flows and the moon is begging for a howling.

i got checked for hearing loss when i retired and the doc was surprised i had such good hearing considering i was a maintainer, but yet, i can't hear shit. Not bad enough for disability, but bad enough i have to ask more than once for people to repeat themselves. argh!!

Them, and a realization that I needed to protect what I had left. Wearing plugs sucked at first, but now I feel naked without 'em. Just wish I would have started wearing 'em sooner when I was standing next to those loud drummers for 4 hours every night.

As a sprout, I witnessed Grand Funk Railroad @ "12" in a concrete basement venue.
Combined with years of listening to fire bells, sirens, water-gongs, alarm panels, and loud-hailers, I hear sleigh-bells, twenty-four/seven, all-year-'round.

It's one reason I love Etymotic sound isolating earphones. They allow me to listen at lower levels, and still hear all I can hear.

I have to play them as an accoustic set with my guitar at a wedding nexct weekend. "When you say nothing at all"= cake. "Bless the Broken Road"- written for piano "Hey, you can do this with guitar, right"? Yep. It's gonna fly, but when the singers practicing with the piano mix, it's not gonna sound the same with a guitar. They (we) are working with it.

Thankfully I talked my buddy (bass guitar) into accompaniying me- a little fill for the set.

I gotta say- my friend Bev? (her wedding) Great choice in music. I do love these songs.

Kind of a cool story. She was crazy out of high school- partied, eventually got knocked up, straightened herself out, went to college, great mom, made it work. For you folks in the spririt- she made some good decisions and committed. She's the drummer in our band at church. I love this girl. She has struggled with relationships (having a kid makes that part hard), but she finally found a high-quality dude who loves her like she deserves to be loved. He's a farmer- good man. Only the best for them.

Now I'm getting sappy. Whiskey to good beer.
