With high beams on, you stand out but at the same time it is harder to tell your speed and distance.

Rule of thumb:  if you can see me coming, YOU DO NOT HAVE ROOM TO MAKE THAT LEFT TURN BEFORE I REACH THE INTERSECTION.

That's if they look up from their smart phone...

Low beam is on like others have stated.  I also usually ride with 2 auxillary lights on too.  I feel safer that way, even if it is a false sense of security, but at least I know I"m doing all I can to make myself more visible.

All recent bikes sold in the US have no off switch for the headlights.  If the bike is running, the headlight is on.

Some do modify their bikes to change this, but any cop will ticket a non-vintage bike with a non-functioning headlight.

Many years ago, I kept the high beam on in daylight to add visibility. I've dropped that habit.

Why? Pray tell.
Decided that if conspicuity is the goal, there are better solutions than running with your high beams on. I tend to go with auxiliary lights.

You missed an option. Modulating headlights. Then you look like a cop and folks pull over.

Lights? Who needs lights? Ride an FJR and everyone will see you coming.

Can't turn off the headlight anyways.

And all sorts of other stuff. Remember the 70s headlight that created a fake ball of light two foot in front of the bike? That worked so well.

DRLs (daytime running lights) here for all vehicles but scooters and bicycles.
If it was a matter of visibility, we'd all be wearing rotating red LEDs on our heads.

No . .. but I KNOW I need one of them . . . . . imagine the fun at the next BBQ!

Where do I find one of these things?

We had two bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
