I hear you. Used to work 15-16 hrs a day. Now only 7. Every weekend off! Still only managed one Sat. and one Wed. eve of riding since Sept. 1

What am I doing wrong?

First ride in two weeks this morning. To work.

Took a me break and aired up the rear tire to get the bike on the center stand.  I can’t find anything in the tire to cause a flat!      Set the pressure to 30psi and will check it tonight.

It's bone empty this morning.  Time to get dirty and get the rim off the bike.

I could do that but it would take me longer to gear up than actually get there.

Yesterday;
Took the front wheel off the new-to-me BMW F800ST.  The bike is a factory low so it doesn't have a center stand (though I've read some guys have installed one).  I put the floor jack under the front of the engine and 'tipped' the bike up on the rear wheel and side stand.
The front axle is 22mm hex head.  I bought a bolt with a 22mm head and a 22mm nut.  I put a nail thru the nut and bolt (aka a drift pin).  Worked great.
I took the wheel to a local place/guy to have the 10 yr old tire (w/ only 6K miles) replaced with the Shinko 005 I bought from RockyMntn.   He also gave me a lead on who to talk to about vinyl wrapping the bike.

Today;
Just took the rear wheel off - sooo much easier.  I put a scissors jack under the right peg/brake assembly.  Will take the wheel and new ContiMotion to the guy in a bit (I'm warming up from taking the wheel off, it's @ 40degs in the garage).

Put it in the back of the garage as i don't see myself riding again till spring.

Dug the Gerbings and dual controller out, gave the old girl a quick wipe down and added the top case for commuting duties. 

I removed the aluminum Givi mount on the rear of the ST yesterday and conferred with a couple local ST1300 riding IBA members on aux tank installs. The picture in my mind became crystal clear and tomorrow I need to pick up some hardware after work. I've got 90% of the needed parts, but lack a couple key things like the bottom bung on the tank, fresh fuel hose and a mess of clamps.

Can you say 500 mile range?  I calculated capacity of the Tourtank that's been sitting in my storage bin at 4 gallons. That gives me 11.7 onboard @ 45 mpg!    

Oil change

Not so much the bike.  But while shuffling the summer gloves & jackets for the winter gear,  I found the Pinlock sheild for my helmet...that I've been meaning to put in  for the last xx years.   Finally did,  and after riding yesterday morning in 43* smacked myself in the head for waiting so long.

Had to make sure it was tucked over to the side of the garage so the Sport-Touring Subaru could get all snuggled into he garage while we wait for the first big snow/ice event of the year.

Today I moved two of the scooters out of the garage and into the shed. Had to make room in the garage for the winter goldwing, snowthrower, and the Burgman, which I hope to get back in the not too distant future.

All new to me, a package deal.  I'll start playing with the black one when Ernst has his heads back on.

That RS fairing always makes me swoon.

I think that's the one I want to keep.

Moved them out of the garage to put brake rotors on the wifeys Xterra. No more braking wobble.

The exhaust valve clearances have been closing up at each valve adjustment.  I actually did a couple valve adjustments whilst on a 2000+ mile road trip, including one at 3:00 in the morning in Ely Nevada:

I'd have done it the afternoon before, but it was 100+ deg F out there.  62ish degrees under the full moon.  Yes, I'm using TP for shop towels. 

So going over my logbook, the valve clearances had been stable until the past year.  They've closed up at least .020" since then.  That's enough recession, quickly enough, that it's time to get the heads rebuilt.  I need to have this bike ready for pillion auditions this fall.  My local guy gave me a quote for $$$ and time, and he'll get the heads tomorrow, when he opens for business.  Today's task was to get the heads off.  Here's the right one:

I don't know if it comes across in two dimensions, but both exhausts are flush with the surface of the seat.  I don't know if it's the margin used up on the valve or the seat receding, but it's time to replace both.

I've also got a new-to-me lawnmower that's going to take some attention this week--motor service and some welding or brazing on the deck.


Hmmm, which to work on?

pulled the carb of the TLR (again). It wasn't idling so cleaned the carb and it is better, but still not right, so I'll do a better job of cleaning the carb plus check the valves put in a new plug and see if it gets better.

Looked at pictures of it and talked to it with assurances of it becoming mine someday. 

So you know, it's always something to do with the last fastener.  Today it was the nut on the left footpeg/exhaust header/motor mount.  I was tightening it up and I wondered, "Hey, what's that thing spooging out?"  It was part of the spring washer:

So a quick run to the hardware store for a full set of new spring washers and some more Xmas shopping and I was able to finish the install.  I set the throttle cables to a baseline, opened the fuel taps, pulled the chokes, and heard it run for the first time since June!  No ride quite yet, I need the boys to help me get it down the portable ramp and out of the shed.  But it's looking good:

A little riding, an oil change, a valve clearance check and retorque, and I'll be ready for a ride on any good day.

Pulled the batteries out of them and will rotate them on a tender in the basement.

I put a new tailbag on the DR. I use fishing bags from Bass Pro. They last a couple years, then get replaced.

Yes, the bike accelerated above the speed limit all by itself. 

Looked at a Ventura setup for the 1000, had one on the 650 which I used a lot and liked, did't really care for it so I'll just use the old Ventura pack strapped to the seat if I need that much stuff.
