Congrats.  We're doing something similar but with far fewer resources.  Sold the house last year and plan to move to the property we own outright.  Working now on whether to finance a doublewide or pay cash for a singlewide.  Mortgage free would be nice but failing that, a 375 dollar mortgage wouldn't suck either.  The idea of not being tied to a stupid job just to pay the way too expensive bills is quite nice.
Have you looked into modular homes?  Cheaper than stick built but sturdier and better made than mobile.

This.  And much faster from groundbreaking to completion.

Leaving California!   I will be doing the same as soon as the girls graduate (3 more years).  Hopefully the trend in housing prices in So Cal continues. My current house it worth almost 2.5 times as much as I paid for it.  :bigok:  Keeping an eye on Arizona as a location we may move too.

Same floor plan is 10 to 15k more for modular option plus another 10 to 20 more for something to put it on (crawlspace or basement foundation) and the space to make that happen (think crane).  Doublewide goes on concrete piers and that's all included in the price.  Price, btw, is the driving factor since this is temp housing till we can build elsewhere on the property.  Continue discussion in the "I need a loan" thread.

Temporary housing while you build something different?

Can you be happy in the single-wide, and get a Tuff-Shed for "stuff" that you don't want to get rid of, but don't want in the temporary home, either?

Yeah, a $375 mortgage sounds good, but if it's a $375 bill on a temporary home, that resulting $4,500/year could be used on finishing the real house.
