Subject:
URGENT - IMMEDIATE RIDING BAN ON R 1200 RT WITH DYNAMIC ESA


Effective Immediately
There is a Stop Ride and Stop Sale in effect for all R 1200 RT (K52) motorcycles with Dynamic ESA (options 191 or 233).

All customers who own or ride the above motorcycle must also be informed immediately!
Please use every means of communication possible (telephone, email etc.) to ensure affected customers are informed as quickly as possible.
At this time, BMW cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.
BMW Motorrad is currently working on a solution as a matter of urgency.
Attached is a list of affected motorcycles.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
We apologize for any inconvenience to you and our mutual customers.

A statement from BMW reads: "We regret to inform you that with immediate effect all 2014 R 1200 RT with Dynamic ESA must not be ridden. At this moment, we cannot guarantee that the plunger rod assembly for the rear suspension unit will not fail.

"Customers of affected machines will be contacted by their dealer immediately and asked not to ride their motorcycle. Whilst this is extremely disappointing for our customers their safety is BMW Motorrad's priority."

This is always the risk of a new fresh design. Hopefully BMW will resolve it quickly for the owners.

This part struck me as strange, "BMW dealers are currently contacting the 500-or so UK owners to explain the situation and work out how affected motorcycles will be fixed."

500 or so UK owners? Is this a small batch problem or widespread?

I was supposed to have one for the weekend while I have new shoes fitted to the GS, maybe not now....

Sounds like a small batch issue. Can't imagine only 500 sold there so far.

About 8,000 bikes affected worldwide; they've suspended sales of the RT w/Dynamic ESA.  BMW is taking a pounding on this.

I gotta say, those options for owners above look pretty sweet for a sucky situation.

BMW is in full damage control mode, and it looks like they are going to deliver.

2500 cash, loaner bikes, FULL CREDIT on purchase price if you want a different Beemer, etc.

Wow. That's custserv.

All of the shocks for customer owned bikes landed at dealers last week, most of our customers have already been fitted with the replacement shock. Damned glad to have mine back on the road...
