My new F700GS is my first BMW and the first time I've really paid any attention to the brand. I know all riders are unique - look at some of the discussions we have about oil and tires. However it seems BMW riders take their motorcycles and their opinions to new extremes.

Today someone posted this on the BMWOA Facebook page:

i have a 2004 R1150RT and when i put it on the center stand and crank it to warm it up, the rear tire spins while in neutral....is this a clutch adjustment issue?

A few quick responses and the OP should have been able to understand why this was happening, but apparently things needed to be clarified. The responses just keep coming and some have really made me laugh out loud.

Another BMWOA member proudly posted a picture a few weeks ago showing his BMW with a sidecar parked on the sidewalk at a grocery store. He posted the photo because he was upset a Jeep owner parked their Jeep on the same sidewalk, near his bike. I commented that no bike, especially one with a sidecar attached, should be parked on the sidewalk. I stated it should be parked in the parking lot with all the other vehicles.

This BMWOA member did not like my reply and got so upset in one of his replies it caused the page administrator to remove the entire topic. To cap thing offs... this BMWOA member sent me a nasty message through Facebook blaming me for getting his picture removed and then be blocked me - so I couldn't reply.

Yes, they are pretty odd.

In my experience all of their bikes they want to trade in are worth more than they paid.  And when one of them is buying a used one they want it for nothing.  And usually they want to see every single repair/maintenance record.  I would love it if we never took another one of those bikes in on trade.

They also have their own uniform - modular helmet half covered in reflective stickers, high vis jacket or vest, and often riding pants with reflective piping.  Not there is anything wrong with it, but they all look the same.

I've owned 3 BMWs and been a member of MOA since 1986. I used to attend Nationals and club rallies very regularly. For whatever reason, things began to change in the late 90's. I honestly don't remember the last time I was on their forum.

Bike specific forums are complete ass.

On one forum that I'm a member of, they were talking about gear. One guy said he wore Klim. I jokingly said, "I didn't know you had a BMW." He replied, "yeah, got it last year."

I've owned 6 of them, they're nice enough bikes. I really loved my GS which like a dumbfuck, I traded for a Harley Davidson. I had a K12GT after that but while it was a wonderful bike I just got tired of dealing with it's weirdo German foibles. I ended up trading it in for a Super Tenere and couldn't be happier, basically a GS for $10k less and probably twice as reliable.

Most of the BMW people I met were pretty much like me, over 50, half bald HI-Viz ATGATT w/ flip-up helmets and decent enough people. As with any brand the ones posting on line all the time are not the same ones out riding the wheels off ther bikes, those are the ones I would be talking to.

Every BMW owner that I know has been a "unique breed".

Thank God, I'm the measuring-stick by which Normal is determined.

'Normal' is whatever there's the most of.
