Here are some places I love to stop for food:


Pik N Pig near Carthage, NC.  This is the best North Carolina style BBQ I've had and it serves the best brisket I've had in North Carolina.  It's located on a small private airstrip.  Small aircraft pilots fly in and out of this place out all day long just to get some Q.

Huge fan of Le Shio sushi place here in Wilmington. Everything is incredibly fresh, and they have good turnover of the fish because they're busy, yet efficient. Nothing has time to sit around and get old.

And what can I say...? I really did enjoy the old ST.N trips up to Denny's Pub for the burgers and riding in the area and hanging out...  :shrug: I always thought the burgers were good enough and the place had enough kitsch to make it worth the ride up there each year.

Shiloh General Store for homemade donuts.  They only serve them on Saturday mornings.  Second to Voodoo Donuts in Portland, these are wonderful donuts.

If you're driving through CHicago and like BBQ, there are two places to go depending on what you like:

Smoque - best brisket ever. Everything else is very good to good, but the brisket is simply the. best. ever. in. the. country. period. (and yes, I've eaten BBQ all over the country and this is easily the best brisket, from Texas to Memphis to the Caolinas, to Georgia, to Alabama, and everywhere else).

Giusti's is about a 30 minute ride south along the Sacramento River. Or you can be a poseur and take Interstate 5 south and cut over to the river in mere minutes. But then you'd also miss checking out Tony's Taco Truck at the Paintersville Bridge.

And a bit of a review:  These guys make their own tortillas. And the tortillas were awesome. The insides, not so much. I also don't know why they ask me if I want hot salsa (I do, I really do) if they're going to protect my uber-pale self by making the blandest burrito ever.
