As a 20 year veteran (USAF, master enlisted aircrew, MSgt, Ret.) I call on my fellow Americans to unit in a moment of remembrance on Memorial day, Monday.
From
http://www.ngl.org/MemorialDay.aspxMemorial Day National Moment of Remembrance “One Nation,One Moment” A Call for All Americans to Unite
When: Every Memorial Day at 3 p.m. (local)
Where: Wherever you are at 3 p.m. whether alone, with family or friends – such as your neighborhood pool, picnic grounds, barbeques, etc.
How: Simply pause for the Moment– it can be a simple gesture such as a moment of silence, or placing your handover your heart or bowing your head to offer a prayer in honor of those who gave their lives for our freedom. In this shared remembrance, we connect as Americans in honor of our fallen.
In December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and President Clinton signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act,” P.L. 106-579.
It encourages all Americans to pause wherever they are at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation.

However humble or unknown, they (the veterans) have renounced what are accounted pleasures and cheerfully undertaken all self-denials; privations, toils, dangers, sufferings, sicknesses, mutilations, life-long hurts and losses, death itself ? For some great good, dimly seen but dearly held. - Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
