So I'm a fan of Arturo Fuente Gran Reservas (picking some up after school today). A buddy just recommended Olivia Serie V Double Toros or torpedos.

Anyone try them both? How do they compare? Thanks!

Bolivar Belicoso Finos have lost some of their punch over the years.

Punch Punches are still some of the best out there with a little long-term care to let them properly age.

Arturo Fuetne Hemingway Signatures are also a favorite.

I picked up a couple of Chateau Fuentes from a more local shop I had not been to before. I need to get back and pick up an Olivia yet. Now that I know of this local shop, life will be much better.

Now I gotta kick this cold so I can enjoy them!

When I used to smoke cigars, I enjoyed Hoyo De Monterrey Maduros, the dark wrapped short cigars. The bigger ones lasted too long.

Maybe I'll have a cigar this weekend.

Riding up to South Haven on Friday after work for the first time of the year, looking forward to it. Maybe I'll stop half way and have a cigar, I'm gonna go far....

My favourite shop is Cigar Warehouse in Phoenix.

I'm hooked on some Macanudo clones that they sell in various sizes for $2.50.- $3.00

If you find yourself in the Valley of the Sun, that shop is worth a visit. It's about 10th Street and East Camelback Road.

So do you think with the opening up of relations with Cuba we will get some good cigars in the states?

Secondly I have been Enjoying Gurkha Gran Reserve Toros with a natural wrapper cigar lately along with Fuente Chateaus. I actually took one of each, rolled them in whiskey and resealed them in a tube. The results were pretty good.

Also on recommendation from a friend I picked up an Olivia Series V and a Series G, but I have not had them yet. I also have a Maker's Mark cigar waiting for me.

I gotta tell ya- possibly the very best cigar I have ever had I had this summer. Coho brought me a Gurkha Black Gold Torpedo from here:

I would LOVE to get another, and will order one with some Christmas $. Pricey, but AWESOME. I will be saving it till our motorcycle trip this summer again- I had the last one around the fire after a day of riding along with a glass of whiskey.

Not all of us.

In fact, the trade for Cuban cigars has been quite brisk for the past 20 years. The Governator included.

A concern amongst those folk is that trade normalization will put such a high demand on Cuban cigars that quality will drop; either due to increased production (less aging) or going to a mix of Cuban leaf with leaf from other sources. In either case, it could easily drive up pricing.

Thompson Cigar had a five-pack frenzy. I got a 5 pack sampler of Gurkhas (I know I like them thanks to Coho) and another sampler that had four others plus one different Gurkha.

Yesterday was a Diamond Crown. I never had one before, but it was tasty. I would repeat. It was full-flavored. Not as good as some, better than most.

The thing was massive- a part of the sampler I bought. Too big, too much, although it stayed lit pretty well. I probably wouldn't buy one again, but some may like it.

There was always some kind of hugh jass cigar as part of one of the prize packages given out at herf drawings. I can never remember their names but they were equally overwhelming.

Right now, the largest in my humidor is a 7" Moore & Bode torpedo with a 65 ring foot and a 30 ring cap. It's too big for any cigar cases I have. Making time to smoke one is a planning process.

So I'm set on cigars for awhile.

I put one of my guitar amps on Craigslist- a Crate GFX-212T. I usually post what my asking price plus that I'll also trade for good whiskey or cigars. The owner of this site: http://www.cigarfellas.com/ emailed me and came from the Detroit area- we traded a boatload of cigars for the amp. We chatted for awhile about what I like, and he went into his walk-in humidor and loaded me up- he brought about 60 of various types based on my likes:

I've had a few Cuban cigars- and mostly I think it's hype. Some were good, some were OK. Of course, I haven't experimented to see what I like with them, but don't you think it's mostly just in the taste of the smoker?

I like to smoke a Cuban on every trip overseas. They burn evenly, have a nice peppery flavor, finish well. You realize why they have their reputation. But their superiority might be hype; they may not be any better than a well made Honduran or Nicauragan. I don't smoke enough to judge.

There were some bad years for the grow. There was also a lot of pressure to expand their market so there were some of "mixed" tobacco construction. Add to that they high numbers of counterfeits that are palmed off on tourists and you end up with a situation where you really need to trust your source.

In CA you can go to an authorized dealer. You'll probably pay more but you'll know what you are getting is the real thing.

Then, as with any cigar, the makers differ. Some are stronger than others.

I can usually tell if they're real by the distinctive bite at the back of the throat.

Don't get me started on the whole "Cuban seed" shenanigans. Plant DNA(?) can't make up for growing location.

Side by side as a heavy cigar smoker who has tasted a lot of different cigars, absolutely.

If you smoke one or two every once in a while, probably not.

For example. I smoke a Romeo y Julietta corona. It's one of the ones I always get from a quality tobacconist when traveling through Flyerville (Canada).

If you're buying just "a Cuban cigar" for the sake of buying a Cuban cigar from the inconvenience store on the corner you're probably getting ripped off anyway. Even if you're in an area where they can be sold legally.

The best cigar I've ever smoked was a Cuban. But not every Cuban I've smoked was that good. Most of the time they're just good cigars that are different. The great one? It was a Hoyo de Monterrey Coronation Tubo. A gift from a customer he got in Spain. Which is Cuba's biggest customer BTW.

The rest of the business has caught up by concentrating on what their region has to offer but will never have that Vuelta Abajo tangy peppery flavor. That is neither good nor bad.
