No thanks to Virginia, too much heavy handed enforcement there, traffic cameras even in the frigging small towns. Ok to pass thru but no way would I base a meet there.Kind of like using Munich in1939.

S/E Ohio is definitely doable for me on a weekend. Parts of WV are a maybe. Beyond that, I will have to do the math.

PA restricted the use of radar to the State Police.
That restriction has been removed allowing every
single municipality to use radar. Imagine getting
lit up every 15 miles as you ride across the state.

PA required a warrant to search a vehicle if the operator
declined permission.
That restriction has been removed allowing searches if
police have "probable cause". Oh joy.

While neither of these policies makes me warm and
fuzzy, they do serve to show there is no utopia as
far as motorcycling is concerned.
It might also explain why I made nine multi-day
trips to WV last year and two already this year.
It seems a shame to dismiss any state because of
a few bad experiences.

While I'm shocked to hear the way PA once was. I assure u the way it is now is more in line with the way it is in most states. If u are gonna boycott PA for those reasons might as well boycott them all.

My point exactly. You shouldn't dismiss an entire state
because of traffic enforcement policies.

And I wasn't suggesting boycotting anybody. Just pointing
out that nowhere is perfect.

I'd suggest looking into the Lafayette also.
It has tons of atmosphere, a rooftop bar, walking
distance to Hammar ( for food ), a brewery next
door and it sits right on the river.
There's a restaurant on site but no free breakfast
on weekends.
Rooms start at about 75.00 a night.

If Marietta doesn't pan out, I'm stepping away from further inquiries. Fiscal year end is approaching as is my busy travel time at work.

OK, kids. I heard back from the Microtel. They can do a 20-room block for the weekend of August 22-24, 2014 at $85.00/night which includes free breakfast each morning (waffle machine, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, oatmeal, cereal, toast, juice, coffee, tea, etc.).

For dinner options, there's a Bob Evans within throwing distance, a Shoney's and a Pizza Hut across the street, and a very good Mexican restaurant (including nommy margaritas!) and an Applebee's within a 3-5 minute walk. There's also a Marathon gas station right there, too.

I told Janet I'd put the idea out to the group and let her know by EOD Friday whether to secure the block for us or not.

What say you?

Works for me.

As an aside, the annual MSTA (formerly HSTA) "Mail Pouch Flyby" in Marietta is also that weekend, so there will be a lot more sport/ST riders around (riding, dining) that weekend. Not saying that it's a deal breaker on the date, just noting that the roads probably won't be as empty as on a typical weekend.

Haha. It's actually pretty laid-back and relaxed
compared to most places.
It sees a fair share of bike groups during the year.
There were at least three groups booked the
last time I stayed there.

I put forth the information regarding Marietta and asked for feedback. I didn't get very much. (Thank you Garry, tankhead, and Skee.)

I'm happy to be a bitch...er, I mean benevolent dictator and say, "ESTx 2014 is in Marietta!" but I also don't want to reserve a block of 20 rooms if no one is going to show. Silence, to me, is disinterest on this board. Discussion and discourse would at least prove that someone saw my post.

AFAIK, Mrs CB had/has a block of rooms tentatively reserved at the Marietta Microtel last week. I don't recall seeing a "final answser" post yet.

I was deliberately noncommittal because quite frankly, I don't really care where it is, I'll ride there if it fits into my schedule. Date & location are fine by me. I've been pretty vocal about how great the road in SE Ohio are.

There's no reason we couldn't have 2 locations in 2 different months.

Might draw 2 different groups of riders, based on both location and personal schedule.

One major stumbling block...

It's tough enough to find someone willing to do the legwork to organize one meet.
