Author Topic: Yet ANOTHER help me plan route for upcoming ride.  (Read 3582 times)

Yet ANOTHER help me plan route for upcoming ride.

My bike is currently in the shop but some time in May I plan on watching the long term weather and when I see a good clear week forecast from NOVA to points west/north I am jumping on the bike for a one week ride.  I am changing jobs soon and the opportunity won't present itself again for some time.  I'd love to go to Maine and ride the coast again but I stay off interstates and know that I really won't have the time for this.  I ride in WV all the time but generally stay in the eastern portion.  I'd consider going to R-5 towards Deals Gap as I've never been there but I'm also wondering about WV and into Ohio.  I keep hearing there is some beautiful country and roads in Ohio.  I've only done the Ohio turnpike when in Ohio and this never leaves a good impression.  Thoughts?

Southwest. Go. The Ohio stuff is a tiny subset of the state. You can easily fill a week in the western Carolinas and Tennessee.

Chris, when you say southwest, I think Utah, Colorado, New Mexico. Ohio is like southeast, like the Carolinas. Directly east is Canada. I guess it all comes down to your start point.

X-Bigfoot, is this a 7 day week or can you jam some weekend days in there? Like a 9 day week? If you won't get this opportunity again soon, I would cross off any areas that you could hit on separate long weekends and consider slabbing a bit to get to some areas you wouldn't otherwise get a chance to do.

I would consider a big loop that includes western WV, southeast Ohio, eastern Kentucky, down into Tennessee to Deals Gap, maybe down and back to the Barber Museum via the north GA mountains, then work my way north toward the Snake (Shady Valley, TN), Sparta, etc. That would be many days of awesome riding in a row.

My ride report from the 2008 National has lots of good road info. I did a 9 day loop to/from Pittsburgh out to Eureka Springs that includes most of my suggestions above.

I'll leave on a Saturday and back on Sunday so yes, 9 days.  I'll likely slab some but I can't do that much or I go crazy.  I was in Tenn a few years ago on a ride when I was in a crash when riding with a friend in his cage.  I cracked 2 ribs.  I had to ride back the next day on all interstate (8 hours) and thought I would die before getting home.

Yes.  So heading to NC and Tenn would have me going south and west.

The couple times of been through Ohio it has been pretty boring scenery.  I would think the hills in PA and western or central NY would be more interesting roads and scenery.  I have been on some really nice back roads in PA and the lake regions in NY are scenic and have some real nice roads.  But if the current weather we are experiencing here in the Hudson Valley is still hanging around, you will probably wish you went somewhere S or SW of your location.

I highly recommend the Gap roads in SW Virginia.  If that ends up on your RADAR, PM me for the super secret handshake.   :D

SE Ohio is outstanding. So much so that this bears repeating:

Given the time frame you could ride loops out of
Marietta, OH. Excellent roads to east and west.

Outside of the Adirondacks the southern tier of NY is flat and open.

PA has some great roads but with 11 million people it's hard to have them to yourself.

Based on the point of origin I'd run the BRP south, spend some time in western NC,
then loop home through Tenn/KY, SE Ohio and WV.
Surely you can find enough roads to fill a week. LOL

No doubt.  No shortage of good roads in the areas.  R Doug sent me a good one I'll likely run before coming home.
