So I'm looking at my old photobucket pics and I find this shot of the bottom of my topcase.
I ride an '06 Sprint ST with the undertail exhaust. I've had it for a few years, and the topcase is almost always on it, as I commute to work whenever it's 40F+ and less than 30% chance of rain (at least no rain on the way in).
The locking mechanism on my last top case stopped functioning - don't really know why. It would lock shut, but it wouldn't lock to the bike. I assumed (apparently correctly) that it melted.
For the replacement, I added some adhesive heat shielding to avoid a repeat. Take a look at this pic - one season of riding, and you can see markings from either the exhaust gases or heat, not sure which.
Moral of the story? Undertail exhausts are not the best mix with top cases... hopefully the heat shielding will do the job.
