Common problem.  After upgrade battery hits 37% it shuts off. No fix. 

Which 5 do you have and what upgrade did you do?

I have a 5s and just did the newest upgrade, 10.3.1, with no issues.

Battery swap is easy and cheap enough.

It is a 5s and was fine before the update a few days ago.

The average battery in a cell phone is good for 900-1000 charges. That sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. That's less than 3 years of charging it every day, and that doesn't even mean a full empty-to-full recharge. This is the nature of lithium ion batteries of the size you typically find in most cell phones, apple, samsung, lg, htc, etc. It's not a phone thing, it's a lithium thing.

Anyway, the whole 5 series is pretty old as cell phones go, so... yeah, this isn't surprising. :\

Our experience with Apple updates has been as follows:

More than A couple year old devices become quirkier and less functional with each update.  Most of the time, there is no roll back of updates after a very short period of time.  When you call Apple for support, the solution has ge erally been, "You should buy A new device.

No, you can do a full factory refresh and reinstall over wifi, or even OTA if you don't mind the data usage. iTunes is really just a portal into their app and music store any more. You *can* do it through iTunes, but you don't have to at all.

I would check and see if there are any 32 bit apps still running but hogging all the battery usage.

Given the latest update structure, that could definitely be it. And a full wipe couldn't hurt. These are just miniature desktop-like computers these days, and are subject to some of the many same issues with updates-over-time that we see in "real" computers.
