Today while working out, Alice in Chains
-
In the rotation today:
Nightwish
Soundgarden
Jinjer
Zepplin
Foo Fighters
etc, etc
-
I'm currently shuffling through whatever Triumph is in my library. I don't have all (10?) albums, but a bunch. I do, however, have like 4 different versions of Magic Power, a song I freaking love.
I had the entirety of Foo Fighters playing in my earphones overnight the other night while I was working during an all-nighter to help the caffeine keep me going. Walk from Wasting Light continues to be a total anthem song, and a song that helped get me through some rough shit a few years back.

In the rotation today:
Nightwish
Soundgarden
Jinjer
Zepplin
Foo Fighters
etc, etc
You forgot Nickleback.
-
On the rare occasion that I get to choose, it's from a small library on my phone. My go to selections are:
Metallica
NIN - Pretty Hate Machine
Linkin Park
Evanescence
Depeche Mode
3 Doors Down
If I'm somewhere with connectivity and I get to choose, I'm recently smitten with Home Free covers.
If I'm in a mood, I like Blood and Whore by In This Moment. But don't tell anyone.
-
Goodness. Right now nothing is playing, but when it is, it could be anything from Glenn Gould to Joe Pass to Chet Atkins to the Cars to Led Zeppelin to Korn to Dethclok.
With some Zappa and Primus thrown in for balance.....

Good friend Johnny wrote and recorded this song, and put the go-pro clip to it.
He plays the drums and guitar. (IMO not bad for a part timer)
At the very end it's me he is chasing. :)

Muse
Gorillaz

Pink Floyd
Nine Inch Nails
Radiohead
Rush

Lots and lots of 3rd wave of Ska bands (Goldfinger, Reel Big Fish in the lead). Also lots of heavy EDM recently. Pendulum, Deadmau5, Adventure Club, Dillon Francis. Changeup is Huey Lewis and the News. I love those guys from back in the day.
OH! recent addition is a couple alboms of Morris Day and the (MF'in) Time! Funky junkies!
I really need to clean up my phone library though, or at least make some playlists. I'm getting to the point that the chaff is beginning to surface on my random plays, and I find myself skipping a lot. Currently at 4287 tracks to random through (306 albums and folder mixes). May be overkill.

Adding 20$ of SD memory card to a smart phone finally convinced me away from my stand alone mp3 players. An extra 128gb can accommodate a buttload of tunes.

I have been diggin on the 70's music as of late. I am I front of the wood stove now with my 80's vintage Sony speakers on either side of it listening to the 70's channel on satellite enjoying a two hearted ale. Doesn't get much better. I love for the most part the simplicity of (actual musicians playing music that is not overly produced) and lyrics you can actually understand that usually tell a story.

I absolutely can get you. I used to think of the 70's as depressing. But now that I am in my early 50's I totally agree. I love the singer songwriters of the 70's especially. But I always loved Joni. With Jaco on bass you will never go wrong.
-
I loved being five, but I’m right with you Gary Classically inspired harmonies on “pure” instrumental tracks and a good dubbel. Most of you would not recognize what’s on my CD player this morning. Mostly British acid jazz, like Incognito, although one could argue they’re French.

I'm glad younger people listen to the "older" stuff, just like we did when we were younger, but man... no one's immersed in the music any more (it seems, other than the super radio proper audiophile). It all feels so drive by. I love that all the information you could ever want is at your finger tips, rather than having to wait up 'til like 11pm to hear an interview with John Wetton or Rick Emmett or John Entwistle on terrestrial radio.

After shampooing the basement carpet, I'm now in the comfy chair in my study listening to Pandora's Celtic Holidays while drinking a Deschutes Obsidian Stout. My wife is baking Christmas cookies. The dog is snoozing close to the kitchen just in case something good were to somehow fall on the floor.
Life is good.
I'm really liking Pandora. It seems that they can find the more obscure, or at least atypical, music that I'm interested in. There's just not that many people who are interested in Renaissance lute music, for example.

Not QUITE the same, but it would have done your heart good a couple years ago... I bundled up all my old CD collection for yard sale (5 per bundle, 2 good on the outside, 2 ok, and 1 CRAP) and the younguns were FLOCKING to my old metal albums. All the original big 4, Priest, Annihilator, Death Angel, Savatage, Uriah Heep, Sabbath, Def Leppard etc. they were literally salivating.
Not so much the Floyd, Rush, Fleetwood Mac and such... Their parents were grabbing those though. I was pretty surprised actually... I would have figured those going away quicker.
But it was terribly gratifying that the younger set had the fire for the old metal I was fired up about back in the day. I guess it still speaks to the teenage angst.

Streaming don't work for me since I spend a lot of time in places with no connection to the WWW. I've been buying CDs for pennies on the dollar on Amazon, and ripping them at full quality. Automatic backup. Good thing storage is cheap these days. The old iPod is getting pretty full though. May have to look at an alternative player soon.
Now playing: Metallica - S&M

A BMW-devoted neighbor at my old home was once laid up with a bad back and had little to occupy his mind during the day. So he soon discovered that his dvd player had an input jack which suspiciously looked like it would accept a cord from an external harddrive he had laying about. A little playing around, and he discovered he could record his LPs and CDs onto the harddrive (he must have had something to convert the LPs, but I don't remember what), and then connect the harddrive to play the recorded files through his DVD and home theater system. No artwork to go with it, but it gave him something to do while recovering.

I'm staying out of the kitchen because of more cookies (this time it's butter held together with a little sugar and flour, with slivered almonds on top--the doggo is fixated on the buttery scent). So it's back to the comfy chair in the study with a snifter of Brandy and Baroque on Pandora. How can a person listen to Bach and not feel happy?
-
The baked buttery scent has spread throughout the house. I'm probably going to get into trouble by snitching cookies very soon.

I'll drop the turd in the punchbowl here, mostly I listen to Tchaikovsky and other classical music as played by the Halle Orchestra or Ralph Vaughn Williams conducting the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and various others from Vivaldi, Boccherini, Rachmaninoff etc.
If I want something a little more modern it's early Black Sabbath, Led Zep or Metallica or some good old Tear -in-my-Beer country but for the most part it's old stuff.

I'm normally into Baroque, Renaissance lute, Jazz piano, some Celtic and New Age, but lately I've been playing around with Pandora. I'm finding that Loreen McKennitt is fun--kinda like Enya but more ballads. That lead to Blackmore's Night (Deep Purple and Rainbow rocker Blackmore and his vocalist wife Night performing Medieval and Renaissance themed music), Secret Garden (Eurovision winner), and Faun (German mysticism? Pagan Folk?).

Many years ago, my then pre-teen nieces insisted that I had to watch that video. They thought it was hilarious! And it is, if your mind is sufficiently altered by your third Negroni of the evening.
So, my advice is to go on a bender and watch it again. It gets better with booze, just like The Wall movie.

I'll pass but can attest to Jack Danials and copious amounts of good cocaine making the flick "Heavy Metal" at the drive-in most enjoyable.

Tonight is 100% vinyl kind of night for me.
J Geils Band, The Morning After
Vanessa Fernandez, When the Levee Breaks
Cowboy Junkies, Trinity Session.
As for the last one, what a unique album. One stereo microphone, one digital recorder, the band, and a huge empty church. They recorded the entire album in one night and the acoustics of the church clearly come though. Soooo good.

Agreed, but then again I felt it has been all down hill since Undertow. Not to say they haven't put out some good music since, but Undertow resonated with me the most.

I've never been a big fan of heavy metal. Rage Against the Machine has been one of the exceptions for me.
Yesterday, I was in the hifi shop and Fear Inoculum was playing in the demo room. When I got home, I streamed the album on Tidal. Given the feedback, I'm now listening to Undertow. So far, I'm becoming a fan of Tool.
The funny thing is, I was relaxing to Tool yesterday afternoon before heading out to a symphony orchestra concert. I love all sorts, I suppose. :)
-
My queue in Tidal at the moment:
Tool: Undertow
Amos Lee: Spirit
I'll add one more to listen to. After the listening session, I'll head to a new Ramen place downtown for dinner. Life is good.

My tastes tend to lean to very heavy music and my guess is those tastes and opinions don't align with 99% of the people here. Although I like some mainstream music I really don't listen to it often and my tastes have become more extreme as I get older. I do like the complexity of Tools music and was a fan from the first time I heard them in the 90's. I really liked their originality and found they were so much different from anything that was out there at the time.
I do like some classical music though. ;)

I can listen to classical, heavy metal ,blues, rock, whatever and be happy if its well done. My tastes really expanded when one of my life long friends and a riding buddy converted his bar into a music bar, with all types of acts performing there. He opened my mind to all the possibilities and we rode to various venues all over the US to see different acts, known and unknown. He retired and sold the place, but is still a bit of a legend in the Pittsburgh music scene. I gotta go to FLA and buy him a gin and tonic for the old days soon.

I'm a big fan of Tool. I think my disappointment with Fear Inoculum is that it sounds like they took all the cut tape from 10,000 Days and stuck it on a new album, hoping no one would notice. Maynard has been doing some really cool and interesting stuff in the last decade with Puscifer. It's very spare, and from that perspective, Fear Inoculum felt over the top to me. Additionally, all the tracks are 7 minutes or longer with 3 minutes of ideas.

Golden Earring is one of my favorite kinds of bands: Two hit wonders. OK, yes I know they had a ton of hits in their native Holland, but internationally? Two big hits.
Another example: The Romantics.
How many two-hit wonder bands can you think of? I've got quite a list.

Lauren Daigle - Look Up Child
Pat Metheny - From this Place

Amos Lee - Spirit
Saint Saens Symphony 3 Organ
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Dream

I believe that's a compliment for her.
I love the passion in Lauren's voice and the fact she's a singer / song writer.

On a side note, I've just noticed that while I'm not a big Jack Johnson fan, I appear to buy albums from his friends.
Amos Lee and Ben Harper.
-
Here's a funny anecdote. Jack Johnson owes his recording career to a bad day for the waves. He was here in San Diego, sitting on his board waiting for some decent waves when he got to talking to another surfer also from out of town. He told the guy he's a singer/songwriter, so the second guy says that he'd love to record a song of Johnson's.
https://youtu.be/GWtfXjX-NyY (https://youtu.be/GWtfXjX-NyY)
It turned out to be G Love's biggest hit, and launched Johnson.

Ben Harper.
Definitely among the top five guitarists ever from the San Bernardino area.

Thanks for sharing that. A friend of mine was in Costa Rica on a surfing trip last fall and ended up hanging out with Jack at the neighborhood bar on night. My friends says Jack was a heck of a good guy.

Electroswing. Lots and friggen LOTS of it.
Have been listening to Caravan Palace for the last few years, enjoyed the hell out of them but just recently found the 'genre name' that they were identified as (i.e. Electroswing). A quick torrent search dropped a plethora (<-- great word) of tunes/bands categorizing as such. One file held over 36hrs of individual songs (even after I purged anything over 20min long). That'll cover a long weekend!

I've been comparing Pandora to Amazon Music today, and I think Pandora does a much better job of matching music to its stations.
(Long story short, I jacked up my foot helping move my niece last weekend and didn't let it rest sufficiently. I decided to help it heal by confining myself to my study today, sitting in my Dad's old leather lounge chair with my leg propped up on the ottoman. This is making me feel like a lazy slug.)
Back to the topic, Pandora's Baroque sticks very closely to the Baroque period and composers, while Amazon's strays to other Classical genres. And Pandora's Enya station is very good about bringing in artists with similar moods and themes like Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, Secret Garden, Eleni Violaris, Faun, Blackmore's Night, etc. But Amazon's Enya station brings in songs that don't match melodically or thematically, like Tracy Chapman. Don't get me wrong, I like Tracy Chapman when I want a powerful Blues/Pop voice, but her music and Enya's music are very different. I'd be equally surprised to find Enya popping up on a Tracy Chapman station.
Has anyone else compared streaming services and how well they create stations?
-
I've tried Pandora vs Apple Music and found the same. Pandora does a much better job of keeping a mood.

And the rum was all gone by the time they got back to England. The sailors had secretly tapped it and drunk the "embalming fluid" as it were.

Not new music, and I haven't been listening to his stuff any more than usual, but I stumbled across this:
https://www.texasmonthly.com/interactive/big-list-willie-nelson-albums-ranked/ (https://www.texasmonthly.com/interactive/big-list-willie-nelson-albums-ranked/) All 143 of Willie Nelson's albums ranked for quality. Judging by the albums of his that I have or have listened to, the rankings are fairly accurate. I might quibble a bit here or there, but overall this is a stellar effort.
Now, his first record came out in 1961, I believe, so he's had 60 years to make music. Still, that's more than two albums a year, year after year, decade after decade.

Lately, I've been exploring Spoon albums. Does anyone have a favorite? "I like Kill the Moon" and "Girls Can Tell" so far.
I have also picked up on soul artists, "The War and the Treaty." Anyone who listens to this very soulful married couple from Baltimore and doesn't start tapping their feet may need to have a checkup with their doctor. :)
Eilen Jewell has piqued my interest lately. So far, her "Queen of the Minor Key" album is my favorite.
Finally, I have really fallen for the sound of the cello. Peter Gregson has been the best remedy so far with the two disc "Bach - The Cello Suites" album.

Flipped over to Sirius Beatles channel. Nice change of pace since I've not listened to them in a long time.

Porridge Radio are rather good. Try them.
Finally got hold of a copy of Ernie Graham's eponymous album. On CD, but then even the CD goes for £100 usually. Got it for much less.

This morning my friend Tom mentioned listening to a podcast in which a band named "The Groovies" was mentioned. Tom's memory is suspect at best, but I searched Pandora for any such band and nothing came up.
There was a band listed by the name of The Flamin' Groovies, so I had Pandora generate a station based on them.
It was freaking stellar. I mean, just amazing. A mix of garage rock, punk, glam and lots of Bowie and Reed. There were a fair number of songs I'd nver heard before from bands I thought I knew pretty well- early Who stuff, or Kinks, for example.
We spent the rest of the day listening to the Flamin' Groovies radio station, and Pandora didn't play a single bad tune.
Would recommend. :bigok:

got loads of Flaming Groovies. Good stuff.

I'd never heard of them, but I do have to say that they were pretty good. But definitely listen to the Flaming Groovies Pandora station. It's excellent.

They spent their most creative years in the UK but never sold well. Their gig at the Roundhouse being supported by The Ramones is legendary.
link to Pandora station?

Just search for the band, then create a station. I'm not sure how to send a Pandora station link.

Mix on the way in this morning was heavy on Huey Lewis and the News. Still love these guys after all these years. Always though they were in the grandest tradition of the show band. The Blues Brothers *wished* they had half of that charisma.
(my old metal buddies would burn me at the stake for this admission... or at least dog me unmercifully...)

"Sports" was one of the greatest pop rock albums of all time.

I had an eclectic mix this morning, as always with my player on shuffle. It started with Looking Glass' "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)", then REO Speedwagon's instrumental "Flying Turkey Trot" from the live album "You Get What You Play For (when they were good...long before they became a ballad band), then it rolled into Heaven and Hell's (last version of Sabbath with Dio/Appice) live version of "I". That's a nice one to get you into the mindset not to take any $h1+ off anybody during the work day. Maybe I shouldn't listen to heavier stuff before work. I still have a couple years to go before I can get a full pension. ???

Today it was, Joe Walsh's "Life's Been Good" and Whitesnake's live version of "Burn/Stormbringer" with Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach on guitars.
-
On the way to work, player on shuffle: Tom Petty "Breakdown", Sweet "Fox on the Run", and Lou Reed "Heroin" from the live "Rock and Roll Animal" album. Guitarists were Hunter and Wagner that became more famous in Alice Cooper's band after he went solo.

Today I'm listening to Digital Underground following the news of Shock G's passing yesterday. This song transports me right back to 1990 when my 8th grade classmates and I got down to this at our eighth grade dance just prior to graduation...FROM CATHOLIC SCHOOL! :o Me thinks none of the parents listened to the lyrics and I'm sure as long as the check cleared, the DJ didn't care! ;D
Peace and humptiness forever...

I keep going past this statement thinking, "that's a strong comment." I own that album and havn't listened to it in years. I clearly need to brush the dust off of it and give it a play.

That one was definitely in the "Road Trip Tape Collection" rotation when I was a kid. Others on the list included "Full Moon Fever" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Paul Simon's "Graceland" and Bonnie Raitt's "Nick of Time."

This young woman does some rather fine stuff. just got her album Uncivil War: Shemekia Copeland.
And Elli Di Mon. Stripped back blues with a modern take.

I've seen Shemekia Copeland a couple of times in concert. She is excellent.
Speaking of concerts, I saw the Blasters, Los Lobos and X tonight. It was a really fun show.

Been listening to Paddy And The Rats recently. I dig it. Not quite as hard as some of the folk-rock stuff I've been hitting for a while, but it's good and energetic.

Uh... it was Mr Hill that passed. Unless a second tragedy has hit the band that I don't know of, that is.
