Regardless of what we do here; I'll be doing the official MotoGP league again. What say the rest of the dregs?
-
I'll be back to defend my half of the 2018 crown.
-
I'm in! you need backmarkers right?
-
In!
-
In!
-
I need the other bookend.
I'm in! And still chairing the trophy committee.
As usual, there's nothing on the motogp.com site yet...

Ditto. Lots of fun, but also hard work to stay on track.

In case (in hope) we have any new participants this year, be sure to give me your forum name and MotoGP registration name so I can add you to the STO leader board once scores start rolling in. Should we post a notice in the general discussion forum to invite people to play, just in case they don't regularly check Pit Row?
Also, at the end of last season I think we all eventually came to a consensus that we would create a tie-breaker: If two of us ended the season with identical points, as Biking Sailor and I did last year, then the person who got the most points at the last round would win. If they tied that round, then go back one more round, etc.
Are we all agreed on that approach to a tie-breaker?

Yea vote on the tie-breaker.

Again. Just glad to be on the podium. But works for me.

Awe hell yea !!
AND
I won't be spotting y'all a race this year...

Is there a league over to MotoGP.com this year? I can't find it, and they race this weekend!

I cant find either.

MotoGP.com does this every year. They wait until the very last minute to activate the game. I don't understand why.
Actually, I think it's worse this year. It's so late, it's making me wonder if they're not going to do it.
The RevZilla league I participate in gave up and switched to MotoGoat.net
I'm not advocating that, just noting it's an alternative.

I was gonna say. Don't know why they do that.

I'll check out motogoat tomorrow morning Lance. Thanks for the lead.

Damn, we're less than 14 hours away from Q1 and still no game on the motogp website. I just registered at motogoat.net (that .net threw me off for bit) as HMFaceplant as a backup. I'll enter riders there as soon as I figure out how.
And it looks like you have to get motogoat.net picks in before Q1. At least, that's where their timer seems to be set.
If the motogp.com game shows up, I'll throw picks in there too. Maybe we should all try to do both this time since we're pretty much out of time to discuss it now.
I really haven't been paying attention. I'm gonna have a hard time figuring who to pick.
-
Here's short motogoat.net instructions for those who don't want to mess with the tldr web site:
Playing:
1. Registration is free. In the "name" box, put your team name.
2. You predict the top ten only.
3. The riders are listed on the home page. You pick by sliding the names up or down.
4. Pics are saved automatically as you make them. There is no save button.
Scoring:
Each rider you pick is going to be scored individually. You get points for how far close the rider finishes to your predicted position. If you pick them 7th and the finish 7th, you get 25 points. If they finish 1 place away (6th or 8th), you get 20 points. It keeps going that way using the MotoGP point system.
That's all, folks.
-
All right, picks made over to motogoat.net. I'm 'melville' there just like here.

One more addition.
5. You can make changes after the start of qualifying but before the race, but any riders you change after the start of qualifying, you only get half points for them.
So, for example, say Cal Crutchlow highsides in qualifying and breaks his leg. You can replace him with Pol Esparagaro, who you did not originally have in your top ten. But however many points Espargaro earns, you only get half of them. But that still might be better than the zero points you'd get from Crutchlow.
The main difference from the MotoGP game is we'll have to make picks routinely without the benefit of seeing who qualifies where.
-
I have created a group for us at Motogoat.net. It's called EOE Cup. You must have an access code to join the group. The access code is: 6569-4611-7804-1236. Let's get the party started!
Also, as creator of the group, I have elected to allow us to pick the top 15 riders instead of the top 10. This has no bearing on scoring outside of the group.

where to click on motogp web site?

It's not available on MotoGP. Not sure it will be. That's why we're migrating over to motogoat.net.

Damn. DNF in the first race.

Registered for Motogoat.net and did my picks but then saw where you only get half points if predictions made after qualifying starts. Kind of take the shine off it now. :(

Half is better than none. I’ll get my picks in

I’m in

In the group, and I've expanded my picks to 15. Thanks Kneescrubber!

Excellent racing!

HMFaceplant 220
Kneescrubber 217
Black Hills 204
motodog650 174
Team Coqui 172
john gilboy 172
melville 171
Biking Sailor 109
Excellent racing this weekend and clearly the young guns are coming.
Updated. Because Ed can't seem to get his shit together. :blbl:
-
And I finally joined the group... At the top, of course. I had 220.
I didn't realize you could change it to make it 1 through 15. Luckily, I kind of did that anyway because I was making those picks when I figured out the main game only took 1-10.

Current STO EOE Cup standings. Not looking good for last year's STO co-champions, yours truly included.
The good thing about Motogoat is that it keeps track of separate leagues, which makes the scorekeeping easy. Because it's already done. (My team name is bolded because I opened the standings under my account.)

Wow. I did not expect that result.
I'm a VR46 fanboy and I always pick him to win. Otherwise I pretty much follow the season standings. Sometimes I even check the injury list.
-
2 in the top 20 and 5 in the top 50 overall with 8 players.

As the admin of our group, I now have the ability to disable the penalty for changing your predictions after qualifying starts. Keep in mind, you would still be penalized in the overall Motogoat standings. I'd like input from everyone on your thoughts about that.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I would rather be able to make picks after qualifying. On the other hand, for me personally, changing the rules now would be a big problem. I am participating in two groups but on the same account/team name. So changing the rules now would effectively eliminate me from one group or the other. If I made my picks after qualifying, I'd do better (we hope, at least) in this group but I'd suffer the half-of-my-points penalty in the other group. If I made picks before qualifying, I'd be at a disadvantage in this group to the others who made picks after qualifying.
If the rules had been changed before the season started, I could have set up two separate accounts. Not that it's anyone's fault. Well, I say it's MotoGP.com's fault for not doing their game and leaving us scrambling for an alternative at the last second with no time to plan.

You will get no argument from me on that Lance. It was offered to me as admin so I figured I'd put out for discussion between us.
I'd really like at least a  or  from everyone else. :twofinger: Will work fine too.

I'm with Lance. We shouldn't change rules now if someone gets hosed.
It's good to know, though. I'd like to see us pick after qualifying next year.
Quick question on the game: If you forget to make picks some week, does it enter the default picks for you?

I wonder if, over the course of the season, the default would kick my butt.

doesn't matter to me either way.

Not sure about that. I didn't make any picks last week and my score didn't change.
I doesn't matter to me now cause I'm out, but the picking pre qualifying didn't fit my schedule. I always made picks after warmup ever since getting hosed on a guy crashing in warmup and missing the race. At that point started doing the analysis Sunday morning and found it liberated my Saturdays from having to worry about it. But agree with the position that shouldn't change the rules now and like Lance said, could screw guys in multiple leagues.

Just a quick tangent -- been burned on that too. I think it was Aleix? Anyway, I realized if someone goes down in warmup, I'll always be screwed. The races typically start around 6:00 am here. No way am I waking up before that on Sunday to see if someone fell. I did like picking after qualy, though.

W00t! I spoze everyone had MM for the win? I had Vale for the win and MM for 2nd, so maybe I wasn't hit quite so hard.

I did. I picked Crutchlow to have a pretty good day too.
Motodog is 13th overall. Woot!

Motodog is 13th overall. Woot!
That raises an interesting point. Motodog is 13th overall, and that's based on the top 10 picks, but he's in fourth place in our little group, which is based on the top 15. That's a surprising difference. Obviously, he'd be in first place in our group if it were based on 10, not 15.
Meanwhile, after winning both the leagues in which I participated last year, I am a total backmarker this year. The guy leading the ZLA league I participate in is in sixth place overall at Motogoat. (But to be honest the only reason I beat him last year is because he fell asleep one night while watching timing for a warmup session in Europe and didn't get his picks in, thus suffering a DNS. The guy's good.)
Looks like I won't have to worry about adding any more space on my garage wall for new trophies this year.
-

Me too. Should've known better, Cal always crashes out at COTA

Just a reminder to everyone playing. Q1 starts at 0710 CDT Saturday. You need to get your picks in before then. Good luck to everyone.

Updated after Le Mans. Could've snuck up another couple of places if Vinales hadn't let me down. Then again, I'm betting everyone here had him in the top 3. Very much not liking having to pick before the grid is set. :csm:
-
Oh, well. 'Twas a fun time on top.
-
So here's a fun fact: I have a slight lead for the EOE cup, but everyone without a DNS -- motodog, melville, kneescrubber, and coqui -- is ahead of me in the overall rankings.
I must be making good money between P11 and P15.

This one is much more forgiving than last year if you forget to make your pics...... ;D

The more I look at motogoat the less I understand about the scoring method. Not complaining mind you, some of it just don't make much sense to me
-
Speaking of scoring, here's something I think qualifies as irony.
Remember we had the discussion about changing our rules to allow our group to make picks after qualifying without a penalty? I was one who raised the issue that although I'd rather make picks after qualifying, it could create a problem for me because I am in two groups and if they were scored differently because of a rules change after the season started then I'd be penalized. Well, we decided not to change our rules and allow picks after qualifying. So then the other league I'm in, the RevZilla employees group, DID change the rules to allow making picks after qualifying without a penalty.
So now I'm getting killed in that league because everyone else is free to choose riders after qualifying while I'm making picks before qualifying to avoid a penalty in this group.
Of course that's a poor excuse, because I'm not doing all that well in the EOE Cup this year, either. But I've thrown in the towel in the other one.
Guess it's just not my year.

Saw this coming so I bailed early. It just didn't fit my schedule to go over the data on a Friday night or early Saturday morning. Still enjoy going over the data where we total our own points, but no prizes and no super cool trophy.

So far, so good. Like everyone else, though, I'm missing the old game.
Interesting experiment this week. I'll be off the grid from Thursday through the weekend. Put in my picks today. We'll see if knowing FP1 & FP2 makes a difference (FP3 never matters to me on the left coast -- that's sleepy-time).

Seems like the EOE Cup is turning into a battle for second.
Updated August 26. Note that after each race I upload a new image of the standings, so any of the past updates show the current standings, not the standings as they were back then.
Another note: For me, at least, the forum seems to be showing a cached image instead of the current one: http://www.coffeericeandbeans.com/imageserver/2019%20EOE%20Cup%20standings.png (http://www.coffeericeandbeans.com/imageserver/2019%20EOE%20Cup%20standings.png). Maybe I need to start doing this differently. If you're seeing Team HMFaceplant with 2400 points, that's the current version.

This Motogoat stuff is complicated.
I'm second in the EOE Cup. A distant fourth in the RevZilla league. And 11th overall. All of the people ahead of me in the RevZilla league are behind me in the overall standings. How is that even possible?
Because I am playing under three sets of rules:
Choose 15 in EOE Cup, penalty for choosing after qualifying.
Choose 10 in RevZilla league, no penalty for choosing after qualifying.
Choose 10 in overall standings, penalty for choosing after qualifying.
I think I'll just stop paying attention and check at the end of the year to see how I did.
-
Yeah, I've been behind most of the EOE crowd in the overall since the beginning of the season. I'm apparently pretty good at picking spots 11 through 15.
The difference between this game and the others we've done is there is no advantage here for picking well at the top of the grid. Each spot carries exactly the same weight. You get the same points for picking 15th correctly that you get for 1st. It's working to my advantage at the moment, but I don't really like it.
-
And there's a pass for the lead! Current EOE Cup standings:

I got the top four in the correct order in Thailand. The MotoGP rider's title may be settled, but the EOE Cup looks set to go down to the very end, like last year.
-
By the way, shout outs to motociclista and motodog who are 11th and 25th, respectively, in the overall. Making EOE look good. In the overall, I'm in the mid-50s. 56th, I think.
There's another small league of refugees from the motogp game that is also doing the 1st through 15th rule and I joined them for the heck of it when I signed up. I have the lead, so EOE represents there too. Maybe Team Coqui should sign up to that group real quick and suddenly appear in first place (evil grin).
Another by the way -- I almost forgot there was a race this weekend. Don't ferget yer pix. And also, remember it's Japan. The schedule will be running earlier than normal.
EDIT: Unless you're motociclista. You should go ahead and forget. ;)

There's always a decent chance of that, Squeezer. Always.
I still just can't get over the fact that I'm 11th overall and fourth in the RevZilla league. Screwy MotoGoat rules.

I guess Australia was a tough week for everyone.* I had a pretty bad score and still moved back into the lead (narrowly).

* Of course especially for those who had to ride in strong, gusty winds on a cold track at high speeds knowing their tires might not be up to temperature and might hurl them into a gravel trap at extreme velocities. Almost as hard as pursuit of the EOE Cup.

They're slackers compared to us.
Two to go, super tight race, and I'm afraid I used up my tires.
-
Just making an announcement that this is my DNS week. I don't have my motogoat login saved on my laptop and was outta town.
That said, I think the default listing they give might be better than my usual VR46 to win choice.
Edit: If you don't make any pick whatsoever, the race disappears from your results. Sepang is not an option now.
-
And team HMFaceplant retakes the lead!
For those of you not closely following the stats, let me point out what a wild ride it's been for Team HMFaceplant at the three fly-away rounds. A season-high (and amazing) 182 points in Japan. A season-low 94 points in Australia. And an impressive 168 points in Malaysia, second-best result of the season, to surge back into the lead going into the final round.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
Also, although Motodog is third in our league, he's fifth overall at Motogoat, the best ranking of any EOE Cup competitor.

We're passing each other on every corner. Motociclista may be positioned for the slipstream on the final straight.
I had both Crutchlow and Zarco in the points, so I managed to survive that. What a kickass ride by Zarco.

Thanks for the shout-out Lance !! Go figure
Apparently you're a lot better at picking positions 1-10 than 11-15.

Nothing wrong with my 11 - 15 picks. Don't appear to be getting credit for them...
-
You're getting credit. Remember that the overall rankings are based on picking the top 10. The EOE Cup ranking are based on picking the top 15. So that's why you have 2606 points and rank fifth overall in the global rankings but you have 3621 points in the EOE Cup and are third in our league.
Just as a comparison, you are 26 points ahead of me (2606 to my 2580) overall and 58 points behind me (my 3679 to your 3621) in the EOE Cup. The difference has to be in the 11-15 positions.
-
Yeah, I'm another 100 points behind Team Coqui in the overall (1 thru 10) and ahead in EOE. It's got to mean that I've done pretty well with places 11 to 15. That kind of bugs me. Not enough to turn the trophy, mind you, as long as I don't run wide in the final corner.
-

I find it hard to believe that points from 11 - 15 would make that much difference for either of us. Motogoat is a bit screwy IMO. I hope we can find a better alternative for next years EoE...
-
Remember that picking the 15th-place finisher correctly gets you just as many points in this system as picking the winner correctly. That was not the case in the MotoGP.com system.
-
And the 2019 EOE Cup MotoGP champion is Team HMFaceplant! A strong finish at Valencia sealed the win.
Also well deserved recognition to Team Motodog for finishing fourth in the Motogoat overall standings.

Victory! I finally have the other bookend!
Kudos to motodog for 4th overall and motociclista for 16th. I finished 48th overall, but since I was making my money in positions 11 through 15, I also won the other group I was in that picked 1 though 15 instead of 1 through 10. I think that makes me Master of the Mediocre.*
* Just want to point out that I don't think anyone on that grid is a mediocre rider.
-
Good job, Ed. Your best two races of the year were in the last four, at Japan and Malaysia. Way to finish strong.
