Big storms coming through this afternoon- plus it's up to 62F right now. So, I am spending this afternoon putzing around in the barn, watching the storm, doing a bit of seasonal maintenance on my mower deck before I put it away.

Yep, there are only a few places in town that have Raspberry Tart in stock. They stopped production for awhile because they ran out of raspberries :P Word is that they should start up in a month or two, but I have a personal stock and a store I know that bought a 3 month stock as soon as they heard production was stopping ;D ;D ;D

A few of us left work and headed to Single Brother's Bar where I enjoyed a Bulleit Frontier Whiskey (10 year) followed by an Eagle Rare 10 year old. Both neat with a side of water. It never ceases to amaze me how more vanilla tasting the Eagle Rare becomes the more you let it open up. (so good).
We left and went across the street to Finnegans Wake for some food. There I had a Midleton Very Rare (neat) followed by a Founders Centennial IPA. I've never had this wonderful IPA before. I've missing missing something good. :in love:

My local brewery.
It actually works well. :bigok:I love reds rye pa, has been a favorite for a few years. I stopped buying it when they switched it from $8.99 a six pack, to $13.99 a four pack. It finally dropped to $11.99 a four. As much as i love it, im not going to support their price gouging
For those of you that like Founder's IPA (which is one of my favorites for sure- possibly #1) you REALLY need to check out Founder's Red's Rye. I know they bottle it, but it might not be as widely distributed as Centennial IPA. It is basically a nice rye IPA. There was a growler of that involved in last night's festivities as well, and it could be my favorite beer of all.

I've got a bunch of disparate leftover ingredients from the two recipes, so I might just pour all that crap into the fermenter and make a trashcan ale. How bad could it be?

Should have a red, white, and blue ale in a month. (Red ale, white candi sugar, blueberry purée). Awwww yeah
Hoping so- I had to add a lot more water to the fermenter than I usually do- lost a ton on the boil for some reason.
Might just toss some simple syrup into the fermenter in a few days.

During our vacation, I was able to sample some wonderful new-to-me whiskies.
* High West Double Rye from Park City, Utah. It was surprisingly light and smooth for such a high rye mash bill. I can't think of a better rye for the money except for George Dickel Rye.
visitors can't see pics , please register or login
* AH Hirsch Reserve. This is a very smooth and fairly complex bourbon. And, I can't believe how little I paid for such a generous pour in a brandy sniffer! While AH Hirsch doesn't go for as much as a Pappy's, it is around $300 per bottle.

* Knob Creek Rye. I'm a fan of Knob Creek Bourbon. In fact, it's one of my readily available favorites. Compared to other Ryes I've had lately, this one was too powerful and bitter for my taste.

* The Balvenie 21 (Port Wood). This is the smoothest oldest Scotch I've had. It was wonderful! It's a shame it costs so much. I like it much better than my Macallan 18 (Sherry Wood aged).

(*which means I'll be in bed by 10pm. :rolf: )
So how was the ride today?
Ended up as a 20 minute ride to make sure the Ducati was in order. and then I got busy playing in the house and catching up on Hulu (Constantine...I dig that show.)
I'll make up for it this weekend. The Monster is chomping at the bit for a hard shakedown. Cerro Noreste on Saturday anyone?
Balvenie 15 Special and an Oliva V Maduro Cigar.

(*which means I'll be in bed by 10pm. :rolf: )
I have an Olivia V I will be partaking of at some point soon. What are your thoughts?
As for me? Several IPA's, some very tasty hard cider I made (wild yeast seems the best), and few lagers. I used some yeast awhile back on about 4 gall09ons of cider- it's too tart. It is going to become shine. I'm having a bowl of Lucky Charms right now to cure the beast within.
Clay, speaking of which...do you brew any Stouts? I have a feeling I need a new hobby...and I do love me some stouts!

I do. I make a pretty simple breakfast stout that's pretty tasty. I have made others- an oatmeal stout- but the breakfast is my goto. Probably in my top 3 favorite beers of all time.

By the time it stopped foaming the bottom of the plate was covered.
That's a great idea. One plant is way too much for me, but if I can help out some other home brewers at the same time I think it might be worth it.

Let the R Doug drunk posting begin. ;D
Power through! Bourbon and water and watch the movie!
I'm starting to sober up. Should I...
a) continue with another tasty beverage and keep it going?
b) start drinking water and enjoy the movie Sheri rented?
c) both a and b above because I have one heck of a toothache and bourbon is SO much better than ibuprofen?
Ran the 'still tonight. I had some hard cider I made that was just OK. Pulled about about a quart of goodness. Had some of that- you have to sample to know how the run is progressing!
Yay! Clay's drunk posting again!

I don't have a clue; but it looks ready to me. I'll be right over.
Not sure I'm going to do lagers again. They're actually kind of tough to make, have extra steps, take three times as long. The end result is something that's readily available for not a lot of dough.
I'll find out if it's any good in about two months. This is more an experiment to see if my technique is up to par.
Tonight, Sheri gave me a blind taste test of the following:

Charge your glasses with the drink that fuelled the British armies in 1812. This traditional recipe, light bodied, smooth drinking, English style Bitter has a copper brown colouring, a floral/roasted malt scent and a taste of rye bread and black coffee. Raise a glass to 200 years of peace.

...Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is from beverage giant Diageo (that isn't what makes this special). What does is the fact this new Bourbon brand is from the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery. This is the site of where the legendary Julian (Pappy) Van Winkle made his mark in the Bourbon history books.
The Blade and Bow project started three years ago with intentions of honoring the heritage of the Stitzel-Weller Distillery site. The name, Blade and Bow, comes from the anatomy of a key (the blade is the long section and the bow is the end or ornamental part) and the Five Key symbol that has always had a strong presence at Stitzel-Weller. The Five Key symbol stands for the five steps of making Bourbon (grains, yeast, fermentaion, distillation and aging) and was later used as a symbol of southern hospitality...
Found something on the doorstep yesterday, and I'm going to give it a try tonight....

It's Falconati's winning submission to Mob Craft. In the glass it almost has a tequila sunrise look. It's nice - not too much coriander, just a hint of blood orange, a very pleasant tartness to the finish. 5.4% abv. It's going down quite nicely after putting a 300 mile loop on the bike today.
Well done, sir! :beerchug:
Get a bottle of apfelkorn and stick it in the freezer over night.
Brew day.
Sometimes it's about balance, grace and subtlety. Nah. This time it's about how much booze I can fit in a glass.
Making a huge Belgian triple with coriander, sea salt, juniper, orange, and wheat. Back of the envelope calculations are pushing this around 12 percent.

I'm willing to bet yours turns out much better. Moved it to secondary just now. It's good, strong, and oddly compelling with the juniper, but it either needs something added or removed and I can't tell what.

Good yeast is key. I use Wyeast 3944, makes great belgians. Keep at it, try weird shit, but always keep good records. You never know what makes a great beer!
A pound of this should turn a pale ale purple. Some ginger and sorachi ace hops should make a nice summer beer.

Then again, I no longer drink beer that can be distributed beyond a 400-500 mile radius. Most of the beer I drink regularly are from Texas, New Mexico & Colorado.
However, all bets are off when I'm on the road. I love trying local brews.
Also went to the farmers market- the currants and tart cherries were looking good, so they're going into a cherry-currant smoked ale that will age for a few months.
Promise to save you a taste for next time I see you- last batch was just cherries but it turned out great.
Looks a little cloudy. Or is it supposed to look that way.
Dunno. I just drink em.
Today I invented this new race where you get drunk at 10,000 ft (5 Woodford Reserves) and then run a 10k when you land. I currently hold the record. It was especially awesome running tonight with the smell of bonfires, cookouts, and freshly cut grass. Oh, and no fewer than 6 neighbors shooting off a ton of fireworks.
Give it some time. Is it a high acidity that's making it sour? Or a possible infection? ( specific flavor really, it can point to what happened) Or is it a tartness, you'd be surprised how many people confuse those two. Let it rest for a bit and see if it mellows. I did a thimbleberry beer that took over a year for it to calm down enough to be drinkable. Same with old styles of beer before hops became popular, such as Mumm.

By the way, you were right about giving the Belgian some time. Another month of cold crashing and it seasoned right up. The odd nose went away and it retains all of the orange juniper wheat notes. I might try this again with a few tweaks.

With mom out of the picture, I've been picking up lots of extra hours freeing up my brother and dad to do more of the farm stuff (I do some too). Still the food & beer are superb. (Rochefort 8 is my fave.) Far better than what you'll find in Amsterdam. Roast boar in brown sauce made with Westmalle Dubbel and Sirop de Liège tonight.
AND FRIES WITH MAYO!
Thank the Lord you Mericuns have discovered proper beer.

it will be a surprise. Company Christmas party at the Lodge in Deadwood, I would imagine they have some decent beers on tap?
Brew day - NYE Belgian with orange, mandarin, coriander, anise, and wildflower honey over a Pilsner base. Should be about 8 percent.

I like the Mount Gay,
Picked up a bottle of this on Black Friday while visiting the in-laws for Thanksgiving in Reno. Screw that shopping shit. We beat the crowds and went bar-hopping at some of the local craft breweries and distilleries.

Elijah Craig small batch last night (12 yo). A friend of a co-worker says it's the best deal on bourbon in PA right now. I think I still prefer Evan Williams single barrel as my under $30 bourbon.

Agreed. But, if you have a 12 year old, it's a rare find these days. Heaven Hill no longer puts an ages statement on Elijah Craig.
For some reason, my favorite under $30 go-to has been Four Roses. But, I'd be just as happy to have EV SB or Knob Creek.

Me? Generally an Old Fashioned is a summer drink for me, but I'm on my second now. It sounded good after a few beers in the barn while I worled in there today.
On my second Sam Adams winter lager watching the Blackhawks and Coyotes. And it's only the first period.

Had 3 of Fourstrings beers while watching the Blackhawks pound the Canadians. Don't know what the alcohol content is but if I had one more I could do some Clay quality drunk posts.

I believe you have mentioned that Mrs. Wedge is a redhead. 'Nough said.
Oh and a pineapple upside down cake shot recipe (http://www.drinksmixer.com/drinkn1m5204.html) Can also keep it simpler with vanilla- or cake-flavored vodka instead of the bourbon and peach schnapps...
Apparently, the bar is serving Mrs. Wedge and her sister pineapple upside-down shots :headscratch: which, apparently she loves. How do I know? While I was watching grandkids I got sent a random video of Mrs. Wedge, on stage, with a full band, playing the cowbell to the classic cowbell song, "Don't Fear the Reaper."

She needs to take up the bagpipes so she can do that AC/DC song "It's a Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock 'n' Roll)". Can't have too much bagpipe.

A bit of an overreaction IMO?

Friday night: Many Founders brews were had whilsy playing cards with the boys in the barn. The place still smells like a bar...
Saturday morning was slow.
Brewed an ESB and a brown pub ale a month or so ago. They're not my favorite, so I counter intuitively have to drink all of them soon to get them out of the house.
I'm out of town this weekend and was able to pick up something new-to-me at the local ABC store to keep me company in my hotel room.

I'm sure there is plenty left for the locals Ed.
That bottle I just drank was, in fact, not my father's root beer.
I am sorry for your loss.
Cool beans CLAY.
Last night I had some New Glarus brought to me by another intern I somehow acquired. Moon Man Pale and Two Women Lager, both great easy drinkin beers.
My boy said "Dad- what are these?" (by the checkout). I figured I'd try one.
It tasted like ass, but I understand the name.
Most “buy backs” or anonymous drop-offs are related to a presumable scourge on the streets, where threats to civic welfare and matters of personal safety are at hand. Which is why you’ll often hear of communities hosting drop-offs of things like guns, knives, drug paraphernalia, and now, apparently, Budweiser.
This Saturday, May 21st, Buffalo’s Community Beer Works will be hosting an actual, honest-to-goodness Anheuser Busch Beer Buyback. From 12pm to 8pm, citizens of Buffalo can bring their unused Anheuser Busch products to 15 Lafayette Street, the site of the CBW brewery, no questions asked. In return for that unopened bottle of Bud Light or, god forbid, can of Bud Light Lime Raz-Ber-Rita, Buffalo citizens will receive $1 toward the price of a beer at Community Beer Works’ retail location.
Don’t expect to get rich, the cap is just $2 per person. But according to the CBW, Buffalo’s first nanobrewery, monetary gain isn’t really the spirit of the buyback. “We don’t care where the Anheuser Busch product came from or how you acquired it. You don’t even have to pretend someone left it in your fridge after a party,” CBW’s Chief Operating Officer Chris Smith says in the press release. “We just want it off our streets.”
When asked why Smith and the CBW are calling for such an urgent buyback of Budweiser, aka “America,” Smith insisted “it’s clear that Unintended Consumption of Anheuser Busch (UCAB) can have possible negative side effects. In our anecdotal experience, we’ve seen far too many friends suffer from loss of taste enjoyment and paroxysms of patriotism.” In fact, Smith is so concerned for his fellow Buffalonians (we know that’s probably wrong) he recommends they transport their Budweiser products in the trunk.
Considering the CBW’s opinions on the apparent and immediate danger of Budweiser products, the question remains: how to dispose of them? Should cans of “America” be given proper patriotic attention upon their destruction? “You know what’s American?,” says Smith. “Collecting all this beer and then blowing it up on the Fourth of July. While drinking good beer and making our streets beer safe for our kids.”

So. I just did an hour of sprints on the bicycle in a nasty headwind. This means I have earned myself booze tonight during the debates. What shall I drink?
Should I just maintain a slow steady drip of my favorite wine?

The Espolon is quite yummy. I actually like the blanco better than the reposado, though (yes, I know that's unusual).

Happy Tuesday everyone!
Here are your beers this week.:
Allagash 16 Counties
Port City Ways and Means
Fordham Spiced Harvest
Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin
Stone Farking Wheaton WOOtstout
Hope to see everyone there, and as always don't forget to stick around afterwards and do the Geeks Who Drink trivia at 8 o'clock!
Espolon tequila reposado, since I promised Max Wedge a review.
It's a bit up front is my major impression. It creeps around the edge of my palate and heads straight up my sinuses. I still like the blanco better. I think the oak is turning me off.

Something new I heard on NPR on the way home:
2 oz gin
1 spoonful honey mixed with 1.5 oz hot water
1 oz apple cider
Shaken with ice. Interesting. I haven't had gin in a long time. It's pretty tasty, if you like dirty bathwater.
